Queens City Council members Eric Ulrich and Mark Weprin joined City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Bronx City Councilman Andrew Cohen to present a City Council Proclamation to Autism Speaks, a leading autism advocacy organization based in New York City dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism. Legislators also wore multicolor autism awareness ribbons to bring attention to the disorder. The Council also unanimously adopted a Resolution (Res. No. 638) introduced on March 31 by Ulrich and co-sponsored by Cohen and Weprin, recognizing this and every April as Autism Awareness Month in New York City. Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 88 children in the United States, increasing tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown. “Many New Yorkers, including families within my district, grapple daily with the challenges imposed by Autism Spectrum Disorders,” Ulrich said on April 29. “Today’s ceremonial and this Resolution will help raise the community’s knowledge and understanding of these disorders and encourage the continued support of science to find a viable cure.” “By recognizing April as Autism Awareness Month in New York City, we raise invaluable public awareness for the individuals and families impacted by autism. The more information and resources that are available, the better we can connect the autism community with services and tools to lead full and healthy lives. The City Council is proud to support local organizations dedicated to empowerment and independence for the autism community, and thank all those who are committed to the cause and a cure,” added Mark-Viverito. “Autism has a profound impact on so many families today. I pledge to continue to champion the City Council’s autism initiative, which provides funding for vital services and resources for children on the autism spectrum and their families,” said Weprin. “Today’s proclamation is a proud moment for all New York families affected by autism and those working on their behalf. We are grateful to Councilman Ulrich and the City Council for their leadership and commitment to raising awareness by recognizing April as World Autism Awareness Month in New York City,” said Autism Speaks President Liz Feld. City Councilman Eric Ulrich joined City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, City Councilman Mark Weprin and others in saluting Autism Speaks, which advocates for children with the developmental disorder. Colon Cancer Awareness Saving Lives Colorectal cancer or cancer of the colon remains one of the few cancers that can be prevented through the use of routine screening tests. Despite this, it remains the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and the second most common cause of cancer deaths for men and women. Each year, thousands of lives are lost to this very preventable disease. Drs. Zimmerman, Anfang and Brunner have been working tirelessly to get this message out. They have state of the art offices with in-office endoscopy/ colonoscopy suites in New Hyde Park and Howard Beach. We are affiliated with North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. If you’re age 50 or older, having a colonoscopy can save your life. Regular colon cancer screening is the most powerful weapon in preventing colon cancer. Overall the lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is one in twenty (5%). A recent study in the Journal of Cancer found that the rate of colon cancer in Americans 50 and older to have fallen 30% in the last decade as a result in the increase of colon cancer screening. The process of screening has changed a great deal as well. Many patients have not been screened because of fear of the colonic preparation the night before. The preparation is now significantly easier and much more palatable. Most patients leave the office with a smile. Besides colorectal screening, our practice is unique in many other ways. We specialize in all diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract, including reflux, irritable bowel, colitis and painless hemorrhoid treatment. Dr. Brunner has advanced training in hepatology and treats patients with all types of liver and biliary tract disease. He also did an advanced fellowship in diseases of the pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts- a field known as Interventional Endoscopy. New treatments available for Hepatitis C make this an ever expanding part of the practice. Start the screening process today!
