Are you going to watch the next “Star Wars” movie in December, and are you a fan of the franchise? “Probably. I wouldn’t say I’m a fan, but I’ll go watch it.” Candy Barbaran BY ALINA SURIEL “I’m not going to see it. The last great science fi ction movie was ‘Forbidden Planet’ in 1955.” David Kleiman “Yes to both, I’m a big ‘Star Wars’ fan.” Felix Hernandez “I’m pretty sure I would want to go see the next ‘Star Wars’ movie.” Kenny Yu “If you go, then I’ll go, too!” Susan Chen “I might. I used to have the trilogy in the VCR tapes.” Saad Murtaza “I’m not a ‘Star Wars’ fanatic, but I’ve watched them. I am looking forward to it. I love Yoda.” Sasha McCain street talk “Of course. I enjoyed all the movies, but I’m not an avid fan.” Harry Rutgers “Absolutely. I’m a longtime fan.” Lauren Outlaw SNAPS QUEENS Requiem for an offi cer Just a few months after laying to rest two offi cers assassinated on a Brooklyn street, New York’s Finest again prepare to bury one of their own, gunned down for his incredible service to the people. P.O. Brian Moore was just 25, and had just fi ve years on the job, when he was fatally shot Saturday night for approaching someone acting suspiciously at a Queens Village intersection. The suspected killer turned around and opened fi re. The bullets struck Moore’s face and head. His fellow offi cers and doctors at Jamaica Hospital valiantly tried to save his life. Though there was hope Saturday night that he might pull through, such hope was snuffed out Monday morning after complications set in. Moore’s suspected killer was identifi ed as Demetrius Blackwell, who had been released from prison in 2008 after serving time for an attempted murder conviction. In the wake of Offi cer Moore’s death, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced that charges against Blackwell were upgraded to fi rst-degree murder, which carries a maximum prison term of life imprisonment without parole. We hope the trial sends a decisive message that those who attack those responsible for protecting the public will pay the most severe price possible. In the meantime, let us pray and mourn for Offi cer Moore, who died doing the job he was sworn to do: protect the good people of th is great city. New York State: the banana democracy Where else but New York State can the leaders of both houses of the legislature be arrested in the same calendar year? State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos joined the wall of shame in U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara’s offi ce this week, turning himself in on federal corruption charges. He’s just the latest in a parade of disgraced and disgraceful state politicians caught with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar, manipulating the machinations of state government for their own personal profi t. Last week, it was Assemblyman William Scarborough of south Queens announcing his intent to plead guilty to charges that he stole campaign funds. Other local lawmakers have similarly been prosecuted, but there isn’t enough room in this paper to name them all. The fi rst step toward solving a problem is realizing that a problem exists. New York State government has a massive corruption problem, and it’s up to the voters and the institutions in government to fi x it. The honest lawmakers must step forth and enact real government reform, and whoever refuses to do it must be booted out of offi ce next election. No more excuses!
