The American-Italian Cancer Foundation will bring its mobile, free breast cancer screening program to the Collaborative Arts Middle School, located at 145-00 Springfi eld Blvd. in Springfi eld Gardens, on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The foundation will also hold screenings on Wednesday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Queens Health Center, located at 97-04 Sutphin Blvd. in Jamaica. Appointments are required at both screenings. At each screening, the foundation — in partnership with Multi-Diagnostic Services — brings its mobile care clinic to provide no-cost digital mammograms and clinical breast exams. Women who are eligible for the free examinations must be aged 40 or older with health insurance or aged 50 or over without health insurance and a New York City resident. They must also not have had a mammogram in the previous 12 months. No co-pays are required and all deductibles are waived. The program is funded by the state Department of Health Cancer Services Program with additional support from the City Council, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the state Assembly, Greatergood.org, the RAR Foundation and individual donors. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 230,000 women will be diagnosed this year with some form of breast cancer; about 40,000 of The American-Italian Cancer Foundation will bring its free mobile breast cancer screening clinic to south Queens this month. these cases will likely result in death. Overall, it is the second-leading cause of cancer among women, trailing lung cancer. Digital mammograms can fi nd tumors at their earliest stage of development, and survival rates are higher the earlier breast cancer is detected.
