College Point residents can now apply for $2,500 scholarship

A scholarship opportunity is available
now to College Point students heading to
college next year.
Th e Karl A. Spahlinger Jr. Scholarship
Fund, distributed by the One Point of
Light Foundation, was established in 2015
to provide fi nancial assistance to students
from College Point. Th e one-year scholarships

will provide up to $2,500 to help
cover the cost of tuition, fees and room
and board for up to four students.
Interested students must complete and
submit a Scholarship Application by April
16 at 5 p.m. A copy of the application can

Applicants must have permanent residence
status in College Point and have
been accepted as a full-time student at a
college, university or trade school program
for the upcoming academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded based on
academic merit and fi nancial need and may
be renewed on an annual basis. Preference
will be given to applicants studying engineering
or an animal-related fi eld.

Applicants will be notifi ed if they have
been awarded a scholarship by June 30.
Scholarship funds are sent directly to
the recipient’s school and awarded without
regard to race, color, ethnicity, gender
or sexual orientation. Scholarships
may be renewed provided funds are available
and the recipient meets the outlined
requirements.
Th e following students were awarded
scholarship or scholarship renewals for
the last academic year: Orunava Aarunee,
Sarah Arestin, Melanie Dobuler, Sharon
Liao, James Ng, Jennifer Ng, Cassandra
Renart and Alyssa Striano. All received
the maximum $2,500 amount.
Th e One Point of Light Foundation was
established in 1999 by Karl A. Spahlinger
Jr., a longtime resident of College Point. A
graduate of NYU, Spahlinger was an engineer
for AT&T and Verizon and an active
