Queens native gives back Helps out Houston Food Bank BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO [email protected] Along with members of the NBA and his family, attorney Scott Baron helped out during All-Star weekend at the Houston Food Bank. Baron was invited down to Texas by a friend and was excited to watch the slam dunk contest and other events alongside his three sons and wife. Yet, with his extensive history of giving back, the most exciting part of the trip was the idea of being able to help those in need at an event held by NBA Cares. “When I learned what they were doing with the food bank, I chose to go with my family,” said Baron. The family got together Friday, February 15 and joined NBA stars, such as 2012 All-Star MVP Kevin Durant and Utah Jazz’s Jeremy Evans, in packaging “backpacks” filled with nonperishable foods. Baron and his family became part of a team that formed an assembly line, each giving their own contribution to the process of filling the plastic bags called “backpacks.” “I was amazed how everyone stepped up and became a team,” said Baron. “Everyone did it with a smile because we knew the end result would benefit those in need.” Their hard work as a team made between 1,500 to 2,500 “backpacks” that day, said Baron. After getting together to give others meals that could last them for days or weeks, Baron and his family enjoyed the rest of the festivities the weekend-long event had to offer.
