The crowd included family members, friends, cheerleaders, local lawmakers alumni of the former Andrew Jackson High School. Members of the Campus Magnet Complex and Martin Van Buren High School basketball teams were also on hand, and played a game following the renaming ceremony. Granby died last March at the age of 81. He coached his basketball teams at Andrew Jackson and later Campus Magnet to 722 victories. As noted in The New York Times, he coached Boston Celtics great Bob Cousy and captured 7 Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) borough titles and 24 division titles. Off the court, Granby served as a father figure to many of his players, helping them achieve success later in life. One of those players, James Johnson, who graduated in 2009 from the Campus Magnet Complex, returned to deliver the welcoming address. Ronald St. John, former director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach at York College, served as the master of ceremonies. Also on hand was Brooklyn City Councilman Robert E. Cornegy, who played for Coach Granby and was mentored by him. He was joined by other elected officials including state Senator Leroy Comrie, Assemblyman Clyde Vanel and Councilman I. Daneek Miller. PSAL officials and members of Campus Magnet presented a proclamation and a plaque to the coach’s daughter, Robyn Granby-Poole. kids & education
