Police have arrested a driver who hit
and critically injured a pedestrian in
Bayside earlier this month.
Germain Selby, 39, of Rochdale was
arrested on Jan. 18 and charged with
failure to exercise due care and failure
to yield to a pedestrian who had the
right of way.
On Jan. 11 around 4:30 p.m., authorities
received a call about a crash at
223rd Street and Northern Boulevard.
When offi cers from 111th Precinct
the arrived at the scene, they found a
pedestrian who was critically injured
in the crosswalk.
EMS personnel responded to the
scene and transported the individual
to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens in
Flushing. Th e victim was listed in critical
condition.
Inspector Steven D’Ullise, commander
of the NYPD Highway Patrol,
took to Twitter to announce Selby’s
arrest.
Th e intersection at 223rd Street and
Northern Boulevard has been the site
of crashes and multiple close calls over
the years including the death of elderly
cyclist Michael Schenkman in 2016.
Schenkman’s death spurred DOT to
create a protected bike lane, which
runs along Northern Boulevard all the
way to Douglaston.
Th e bike lane has sparked controversy
among local residents who say the
lane hasn’t made the roadway safer for
drivers or pedestrians.

Detectives continue to look for the gunman
who fatally shot a Brooklyn man in a
College Point parking lot over the weekend.
Authorities said that Twayne Summers,
28, was mortally wounded while riding
with two other men inside of a
black Hyundai Sonata at the College
Point Multiplex parking lot, off the corner
of Ulmer Street and the Whitestone
Expressway, at 4:05 a.m. on Jan. 19.
Offi cers from the 109th Precinct, while
responding to a 911 call about the shooting,
found Summers in the driver’s seat
with a gunshot wound to the head. A
37-year-old man in the front passenger’s
seat sustained a gunshot wound to
his back; the third individual in the car,
a 36-year-old man in the rear passenger
seat, was unharmed.
Paramedics rushed Summers and the
37-year-old man to NewYork-Presbyterian
Queens Hospital in Flushing. Police said
that Summers succumbed to his injuries on
Jan. 20; the other victim was listed in stable
condition.
During a preliminary investigation,
police learned that the three men may have
been involved in a dispute with unknown
individuals at a local nightclub earlier on
Jan. 19. Th e three men got into the Hyundai
Sonata and drove away from the club.
Upon arriving at the College Point
Multiplex parking lot, sources said, an
unidentifi ed shooter in an unknown vehicle
drove up alongside the Hyundai, fi red
multiple shots, then fl ed the scene.
Th ere are no arrests and the investigation
remains ongoing.
Th e deadly shooting occurred less than
four months aft er another Brooklyn man
was shot and killed in the multiplex parking
lot early on the morning of Oct. 1, 2018.
Jaquan Campbell, 25, of Brooklyn was
gunned down shortly aft er he was involved
in a dispute at the Angels Strip Club in
Flushing. Two suspects were arrested in
Florida weeks later, and a third individual
connected to the shooting was picked up
in November.
Sources familiar with the investigation
stated that detectives are looking into any
possible links between the October homicide
and Saturday’s double shooting.
