By Anthony Giudice [email protected] @A_GiudiceReport The LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC) Lady Red Hawks have been on a roll to begin their season, going 6-1 in their first seven contests. This record has led them to being ranked number 11 in the country in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) first weekly Division III National Rankings, the first time the Lady Red Hawks have been nationally ranked in the school’s history. “This season has been a group effort,” said Anthony Alfaro, Lady Red Hawks head coach. “The coaching staff, the Athletic Office and players have all been an integral part to our early season success.” Additionally, sophomore Kailyn Richburg ranks in the top 25 nationally in nine different offensive categories, including ranking fourth in assists, while freshman Marika Gordon is in the top 10 in all rebounding categories. “We have a long way to go and much work to do,” Alfaro said. “It is all about the progression.” Next up for the Lady Red Hawks will be a contest against No. 7 ranked Sullivan Generals on Saturday, Dec. 5. Sullivan has also jumped out to a 6-1 start, and both teams are currently tied at 5-0 atop the Region XV standings. The competition kicked off with the “Kids Ewok Shuffle Mile,” followed by the adult race. Competitors donned “Star Wars” gear ranging from T-shirts and hats to full costumes and masks to run the scenic course. Many runners chose Princess Leia as their inspiration, sporting different versions of her iconic white robe and bun hairstyle. Cardboard cut-outs of Boba Fett and BB-8, a new droid created for the upcoming film, were available for photo ops. Runners were greeted by encouraging signs and posters, including one that read “May the course be with you,” near the finish line. Spectators cheered from the sidelines and waved glowing light sabers as the racers crossed the finish line on Forest Park Drive. Trophies and prizes, including a pair of tickets to a 3-D showing of the eagerly anticipated film “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” were given out to the top three male and female competitors. Anthony Pena from the Bronx was the men’s winner, clocking in at 27 minutes and 41 seconds. This marks the second year in a row that Pena took the top slot in the race, beating his winning time from last year. Lori Brun placed first among the female competitors.
