Find a way
to keep 7 line
moving
After many years, millions of
dollars and thousands of hours
of service disruptions, the MTA
rolled out last week a new, modern,
computerized signal system on the
7 line.
Naturally, the 7 line suff ered signal
problems in the days aft er the new
signal system went online. It would
be hilarious if it weren’t so infuriating.
The MTA says that they weren’t
surprised with the trouble during the
fi rst week of communications-based
train control (CBTC) on the 7 line. The
L line experienced similar issues when
CBTC went live on the L line, and those
problems were eventually resolved.
We would expect that the signal
problems on the 7 line should come to a

similar resolution. However, there are
so many other issues with the all-important
line and others in Queens that
must be resolved — especially now
with Amazon’s grand plans for Long
Island City.
The MTA is adding service next year
to the 7 line to accommodate riders
displaced by the L train during reconstruction
of the Canarsie Tube. The
extra service should be made permanent,
but the MTA should also think of
other ways to keep passengers moving
more quickly on the 7 line — including
an expansion of express service during
daytime hours and on weekends.
Services should also get a boost on
the N and Q trains (which connect with
the 7 line at Queensboro Plaza) and the
E and M trains (which connect with the
7 at Court Square). And we agree with
Borough President Melinda Katz: the
BQX streetcar should move forward,
with Amazon footing most of the bill
(at the very least).
Riders have had it with delays and
crowded trains. They’ve also had it
with paying more money for lousy
train service. The MTA needs to step
up and improve transit service in
Queens.
We realize it may take some pain to
get there, but we’ll take it in stride if
the end result is better train service
for more commuters.
Rest in peace,
President Bush
The nation suff ered a great loss
with the death of President
George H.W. Bush on Nov. 30.
The 41st commander-in-chief
played a vital role in bringing an
end to the Cold War and ushering
in a new era of democracy in
Europe. He also didn’t hesitate to
break a campaign promise when
it came to doing the right thing;
his “read my lips, no new taxes”
promise went by the wayside when
he supported a tax increase to address
a ballooning national defi cit.

COMMENTS:
That kind of leadership and political
courage is lost in Washington today.
Lawmakers in constant fear
of being unseated always seem to
pass the buck on the big decisions.
The elder Bush paid the price in the
1992 election, but the record shows that
he never let the possible outcome of his
re-election campaign dictate what he
did in offi ce. He always sought to do the
right thing, even when others disagreed.
Our thoughts and prayers are
with the Bush family in their time
of mourning.
