sports 46 TIMES • OCTOBER 6, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com CTK Varsity Soccer Through the rain, Christ the King boys v arsity soccer plays to a draw against Iona Prep BY JOSEPH SWIFT [email protected] @jswiftsports As rain fell on the players and the pitch, the Christ the King (CTK) boys varsity soccer team played Iona Prep to a 2-2 tie on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village. Iona Prep held an early 1-0 lead when, in the 11th minute, CTK’s Mark Durak scored a goal on an assist from Nelson Velez to tie the game 1-1. Durak wasn’t done and scored again in the 54th minute on a solo run that made the score 2-1 in favor of the Royals. But Iona Prep was not fi nished, and they managed to score one more goal in the second half to tie the game 2-2. With time winding down, neither team was able to net a game-winning goal and the fi nal score was 2-2. “The boys played hard, played well. Nobody got injured and everything went fi ne,” Coach Hans said after the game. “We will try to do it again next week.” Lady Royals shutout the Mary Louis Academy BY JOSEPH SWIFT [email protected] @jswiftsports The Christ the King (CTK) High School girls varsity soccer team’s defense was the highlight of the afternoon as the Royals defeated Mary Louis Academy 6-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Cunningham Park in Fresh Meadows. Karen Pined and Kiana Leger both came through with two goals each for CTK. Malen Arevalo and Genesis Campos added one goal each, sealing the victory for the Royals. “We were hoping that this game would be a good one for us,” said John Fayad, CTK head coach, after the game. “The girls were controlling the game from the beginning.” Fayed added that goalie Destiny came through for the team in the shutout and has been working very hard since goalie is not her normal position. A lot of the girls played well on the defensive line, helping Destiny secure a clean sheet. Diana, one of CTK captains, had an amazing game and controlled most of the backfield.
