BWG teams dominate in latest round of games
The Blau Weiss Gottschee (BWG)
Christ the King and Maspeth High
School faceoff for a good cause
On Friday, Sept. 15 the Girls
Varsity and Junior Varsity
Volleyball teams of both Maspeth
High School (MHS) and Christ
the King High School (CTK) participated
in scrimmage matches to help
raise money for charity.
Together the teams raised $500 for
the Franciscan Christian Community
of Palmi, Italy.
"It was a great experience playing
against the girls from Christ the
King,” said Brianna of the MHS Junior
Varsity team. “We don't play against
catholic schools during the season. It
was for a great cause."
"The game was intense because of
both teams’ skill level,” added Olivia
of the MHS Varsity team. “It created a
lot of excitement for the teams along
with the crowd.”
MHS Volleyball Coach, Gerald
Matacotta, a Middle Village resident
was instrumental in working with
CTK’s Volleyball coach, Bob Mackey,
to bring the two teams together for
the charity game.
“We’re proud of the players of both
our schools for joining forces for a
good cause,” said Khurshid Abdul
Mutakabbir, MHS Principal. “We
look forward to more opportunities
for our schools' teams and athletes
to raise awareness for important
causes.”

2007 and 2008 teams continued
to display their dominance in
both Blue and White in their New York
Cosmopolitan Soccer League (NYCSL)
pre-academy league games on Sept. 23
and 24, against their crosstown rivals
Metropolitan Oval.
In the 2007 group, BWG won both
of their games, 7-2 and 10-4. In the
2008 group, both BWG teams won 8-3
and 5-0.
Both age groups worked on possessing
the ball and creatively found the
net time and time again. Both groups
are developing to become true United
States Soccer Foundation (USSF) academy
teams in the near future.
