residents vow to never forget 9/11

Seventeen years aft er the horrors
of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks, Maspeth and Middle
Village residents held vigils honoring
both the victims and the fi rst responders
who died in the tragedy.
On Saturday morning, Sept. 8, residents
gathered at Maspeth Memorial
Park for the neighborhood’s annual
9/11 memorial ceremony. The park,
located at 69th Street and Grand Avenue
with the Manhattan skyline in the
background, includes a monument to
local residents who died in the attacks
on the World Trade Center and a piece
of the Twin Towers steel.
Members of the nearby Squad
Company 288/Haz-Mat 1, which lost
a combined 19 firefighters in the
terrorist attacks, participated in the
ceremony and laid wreaths and fl ags
at the monument.
Then on Tuesday night, Sept. 11,
Middle Village residents held their
annual candlelight vigil on the ballfields
of Juniper Valley Park. The
ceremony included a reading of names
of the victims along with music, poems,
prayers and remarks from local elected
offi cials.
