Thursday, Sept. 8 Open Mic: Open Mic Night @ Creative Vape This Thursday kicks off Creative Vape’s first of many Thursday night Open Mic Nights. Everybody is welcome to show off their talents in the form of comedy, poetry, music or whatever else you might have up your sleeve! The event starts at 8 p.m. Creative Vape is located at 894 Wyckoff Ave. Sports: Football Season Kickoff @ Sweet Jane’s. Kick off the first game of the NFL season at Sweet Jane’s between the Broncos and Panthers. They’ll be serving barbecue for this momentous occasion! The barbecue begins at 7 p.m., and the kickoff is at 8:30 p.m., so come early! Sweet Jane’s is located at 64-02 68th Ave. Friday, Sept. 9 Music: DJ’s ILLexxandra and Shakey collide in Empire Breaks @ The Keep. Every second Friday of the month, DJs ILLexxandria and Shakey unify as Empire Breaks, spinning beats and making us move. The event is totally free and promises to include hip-hop, reggae, ska, bass and breakbeat music. Set will be rolled out from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., but the bar is open all night, so don’t be afraid to keep those dancing shoes on all night long! The Keep is located at 205 Cypress Ave. Saturday, Sept. 10 Art: A Night in Kumladia @ Mrs. Gallery. Mrs. Gallery is hosting their inaugural exhibit “A Night in Kumladia” with works by Omari Douglin from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit showcases several different characters and personalities, and their relationship and interactions to the landscape around them. Douglin invites conversation with his paintings, as he is influenced by his personal interpretation with art history and how it parallels and coexists with contemporary culture. The exhibit is on display until Nov. 5, so you also have plenty of time if you can’t make it on Saturday. Mrs. Gallery is located at 60-40 56th Dr. Festival: Bushwig @ Knockdown Center. Bushwig is taking its annual drag festival to Maspeth’s Knockdown Center on Sept. 10 and 11. The venue has a capacity of 5,000 and is symbolic of the festival’s growth. In addition to their 150+ performers, the organizers at Bushwig will also include food, pop-up shops, installations and a techno brunch (what?). The festival welcomes everybody. Daily pass is $30, and a weekend pass will cost you $60. The Knockdown Center is located at 52-19 Flushing Ave. Community: The Italian Festival @ Fresh Pond Road between Menahan and Palmetto streets Honor 100 years of Hell Gate Bridge at the Greater Astoria Historical Society’s Two Tours of Astoria Park, led by licensed NYC tour guide and GAHS trustee Rich Melnick. Astoria Park, Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m., FREE. Participate in family fun while celebrating The 23rd Annual Fresh Pond Road Italian Festival. The event is happening on Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Taking place right on Fresh Pond Road between Menahan and Palmetto streets, the outdoor event will have tons of food (yes!), music and possibly children’s rides. The two-day event is sponsored by The Federazione Italo- Americana di Brooklyn and Queens and is totally free, so no excuses, Ridgewood! Sunday, Sept. 11 Community: 9/11 Memorial Concert with the St. Matthias Choir @ St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church. St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church Director of Music Steven Frank and the St. Matthias Choir will be performing Requiem by Gabriel Fauré from 4 to no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. St. Matthias RCC has put on requiems for 9/11 memorial in the past, but hasn’t done once since 2007, making this a particularly significant concert. The choir has been perfecting the requiem all summer long and this event is a perfect way to remember the many lives lost on 9/11. Free event. St. Matthias RCC is located at 58-15 Catalpa Ave. Tuesday September 13 Art: Drink and Draw @ The Footlight. Express your creative energies at The Footlight’s Tuesday night Drink and Draw from 9 p.m. until whenever. Hosted by Tim Shea. The event is relaxed and kept loose: some materials are provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own as well. Bar will be open till 4 a.m. so you can draw as long as you can hold onto your drawing utensil.
