The kids participating have perfected their skills all summer long at 11 sites across the city. Children from Astoria Park, Juniper Valley Park, and Victory Field were among the participants in the day’s activities. Teams of kids, ages five to 16, competed in various events throughout the day, including javelin, discus, shotput, triple jump, long jump, 400 & 800 meter runs, hurdles, 4x100 meter relay and 100 meter dash. The meet also included events for children with special needs including a 100 Meter Dash that included children in wheelchairs, Javelin, Long Jump and Hurdles. In addition, there was a “Giant” Relay Race for PeeWee runners, ages five to seven. Championship medals at Peewee, Beginner, and Intermediate levels were awarded to first and second place winners. CityParks Track & Field offers free track & field instruction for boys and girls, ages five to 16, with lessons held twice a week from July through August in parks citywide. BWG Takes Univision Tournament The U12 Boys Blau Weiss Gottschee (BWG) squad recently competed in and won the 2014 Spanish language television Univision Soccer Championship. The tournament consisted of 20 teams from New York and other states. The team played six games, were undefeated, and won the tournament with Devin Mulic as the team’s top scorer.
