TIMES, THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2014 • 14 SON SLAYS FATHER IN SOUTH JAMAICA Faces 25 Yrs. For Second-Degree Murder by the 113th Precinct Detective Squad. Assistant District Attorney Briana A. Heymann of the District Attorney’s Homicide Investigations Bureau is prosecuting the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Peter T. Reese, bureau chief, and Peter J. McCormack III, deputy bureau chief, and the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Charles A. Testagrossa and Deputy Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel A. Saunders. It was noted that criminal charges are merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. A 37-year-old South Jamaica man has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his father near the intersection of 143rd Street and 119th Avenue. Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown identified the defendant as Anthony Guyton, 37, of 143rd Street in South Jamaica. He is charged with second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second-degree. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted. Brown said, “The defendant is accused of patricide––taking the life of his own father. The 55-year-old victim was seated in his vehicle when the defendant allegedly fired a single shot to the man’s chest. The alleged actions of the defendant are totally incomprehensible.” According to the charges, near 10:25 p.m. on Aug.19 the defendant shot his father, Bruce Langley, 55, of Astoria as he sat in his Chevy Impala just about a block from the defendant’s home. Moments later, according to the charges, police on patrol in the area saw Guyton holding a 9mm handgun as he stood next to his Dodge Charger, which was near the Chevy Impala. It is alleged that Guyton dropped the gun after police ordered him to and he was arrested. The victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The investigation was conducted City Bill Boosts Jail Evaluations Requires Reporting On Inmate Treatment City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley and the City Council unanimously passed Intro. No. 292-A, sponsored by City Council Member Daniel Dromm, to provide greater transparency at the Rikers Island Correctional Facility. The legislation requires the commissioner of the Department of Correction (DOC), in coordination with the commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, to post a quarterly report on its website regarding punitive segregation statistics for city jails, including: • the total number of inmates housed in punitive segregation; • their age, race and gender; • their length of stay; • whether they’ve been injured, attempted or committed suicide while segregated; • whether they were sexually or physically assaulted; • whether they were subject to use of force; and • whether they received certain services such as recreation and showers, medical attention and phone calls as well as a number of other indicators. “It’s time we re-examine how the Department of Correction administers punitive segregation in our city jails,” said Crowley, chair of the Committee on Fire and Criminal Justice, at a pre-stated meeting press conference in the City Hall Red Room. “This bill will bring an unprecedented level of transparency to Rikers Island, and will enable the Council and the public to have a better understanding of DOC’s use of punitive segregation and whether changes to the disciplinary process need to be made. I want to thank Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Council Member Dromm for their advocacy, partnership, and commitment to reforming our city jails.” The City Council also passed a resolution which calls on the city Department of Correction to end the practice of placing individuals returning to city jails into punitive segregation, also known as solitary confinement, to complete time owed. -SEE JAIL ON PG. 66- Magic Touch Cleaning & Maintenance provides quality service to all customers. ©Times Newsweekly - 2013 - MAGICTOUCH Cleaning & Maintenance Where perfection is not an accident! 718--894--0400 No jobs are too big or too small.
