BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO [email protected] @aaltamirano28 Starting Aug. 17, Queens straphangers will have to be ready to add extra time — and patience — to their morning and afternoon commutes as four main subway lines are expected to be delayed during the weekday rush hours for the next three weeks. The E, F, M and R train, which run along Queens Boulevard, will face delays and possible crowding through Friday, Sept. 4, as the MTA will rebuild sections of the express track through the line. During the three-week period, express E and F trains will be required to go at 10 mph through work zones, which will cut down the number of trains that can use the lines each hour. Some E and F trains will run on the local tracks, reducing the number of M and R local trains that can operate on those tracks. There will be no E train service to or from Jamaica-179 Street, so riders should use the F train instead and transfer at the Union Turnpike station. According to the MTA, the work is necessary to keep the express tracks on the Queens Boulevard line, which is the second busiest line in the full subway system, in a state of good repair. The transit agency, which recommends straphangers plan extra time for their travels during these three weeks, added that the work was scheduled during this particular time because it tends to be one of the lowest ridership periods of the entire year.
