16 times • JULY 21, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com Ridgewood’s Out In The Streets festival took over Onderdonk House By Maria Gotay editorial@ridgewoodtimes.com @RidgewoodTimes Another year of Out in The Streets Festival made for a wonderful summer weekend. The two-day rock festival took place this past Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, from midday into night. The backdrop: the rolling, two-acre green space in the middle of industrial Ridgewood. Now in its seventh year, the festival has grown, but remains intimate and upbeat. Though single day tickets were available, most attendees bought twoday passes and committed to a weekend on the farm. We showed up in the early afternoon and lazed the weekend away watching bands, day-drinking, and tossing around Frisbees. We nommed on barbecue from Bushwick venue Alphaville and rice crispy treats from Brinkles. Sponsor Bronx Brewery offered free tasting flights of four of their most popular brews, a treat for beer lovers. Tea and coffee from The Wyckoff Starr kept energy levels high. The music lineup featured many of NYC’s best rock and alternative bands together under one tent. Some of our favorite performances? An experimental art punk performance from Guerilla Toss, intricate and mellow pop rock performance from EZTV, and the “post-wave” dance jams of Future Punx. When local punk rock favorites So So Glos took the stage, headlining Saturday night, the dance pit that ensued was the weekend’s highlight. Between the sets and the snacks, there was lots to discover within the gates of the Onderdonk House lawn, and we’re not just talking roses and trees. Wandering to different areas of the lawn and rewarded us with little treasures put on by Out In The Streets. The “popup” Ridgewood Market featured vendor tents overflowing with handmade goods made by local artists. Favorites included vintage collectibles from scavenger shop, hand-painted leather jewelry from Jean Brooklyn, and ceramics from JB Clayworks. There was also an interactive art show curated by Talking Walls and featuring works from 10+ artists hidden around the grounds. We had fun experiencing art exhibit “The Tongues” from artist Nyssa Frank, where we were invited to stick out our tongues among a sea of red and pink clay replicas hanging from branches of a tree. Another favorite art installation was built over the weekend as attendees drank and recycled beer cans. The result was an upcycled sculpture of a boombox by installation and sculpture artist Leon Reid IV. It was a hot weekend, with temperatures reaching the high 90s, but it was easy to keep the heat away. Many lounged in kiddie pools or found a shady picnic table to enjoy the music from. We found some of our favorite moments of the fest were spent laying in the grass, bopping our heads to the beat, and people-watching. All in all, it was a great weekend. 32 THE QUEENS COURIER • JULY 7, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com 18 THE COURIER SUN • JULY 21, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com bestof.qns.com AEGEA IS AMAZING What does it take to be And a mix of old world named the 2014 runner up and 21st century is exactly for Best Greek Restaurant what you get at Aegea. in Queens?
