14 times • JULY 21, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com ‘Guys and Dolls’ opens at Maggie’s Little Theater The lovable losers of 1950s Times Square return to Middle Village in 2016. They’re here for an affectionate reunion filled with songs and swagger. Appropriately dubbed a modern musical fable, “Guys and Dolls” offers musical morality for these troubled times. On opening night, this lighthearted story filled with good-natured horse race gamblers is “on the nose” as a winner. Director Barbara Auriemma and her husband, musical director Frank Auriemma, return to “parlay” their talents. Choreographer Nic Anthony Calabro reappears as charming scoundrel Sky Masterson, completing the terrific “trifecta.” Also earning a “piece of the action” is Joe Paciullo as Nicely- Nicely Johnson. He crosses the finish line as one of the show’s most exuberant characters. Longsuffering Miss Adelaide (Dolores Voyer) is the “odds on favorite” to win best Hot Box headliner along with her beautiful back-up (Nydia Blackshear, Amina C u n n i n g h am, Shermeen Saeed, Nana Tatebayashi and Angel Vail). Poor, poor Nathan Detroit is played with a great sense of humor by community favorite Alan Perkins. After all, he just wants his share of the “vig” and maybe another 14-year engagement with Miss Adelaide. Naive temperance reformer Sarah Brown is well played by Alex Jamison. Her voice is showcased in both duets and solos. In a touching musical moment, she listens as Arvide Abernathy (Mark York) sings “More I Cannot Wish You.” Later, Sky Masterson risks everything for Sarah with the classic “Luck Be a Lady.” Some scruffy “turf speculators” aka Benny Southstreet (Anthony E.G. Faubion), Rusty Charlie (Ken Voisin) and Nicely-Nicely wave their “scratch sheets” and sing “I got the horse right here its name is Paul Revere…” Don’t miss colorful furlong handicappers including Harry the Horse (Jim Gillespie), Society Max (Matt Adragna), Liver Lips Louie (Nick Cuttonaro) and Angie the Ox (Jonathan Mora). Other irresistibly charming inhabitants of Midtown include the Mission Band (Ellen Armet, Victor Jaquez, Julia Marshall, Mary Pascale and Brianna Sheridan) and some citizens (Chloe Norvez, Stephen Sheridan Jr. and Chloe Walsh). Watch out for notorious Big Jule (Michael Perkins), Lt. Brannigan (Scott I. Marshall), and particularly prim and proper General Cartwright (Miriam P. Denu). They mean business! The troupe’s venue is the St. Margaret Parish Hall at 66-05 79th Pl. in Middle Village. For information call 917-579-5389 or click on www.maggieslittletheater.org.
