I’ve visited the picture-perfect, friendly-feeling city for a wedding and I have sweet memories of the charming tree-lined streets I walked. It’s hard to believe such hate existed inside the killer. One of the things I love about our city is that people live peacefully alongside each other. There is a tolerance of each of our different cultures. In fact, Flushing High School has 136 different languages spoken and everyone gets along. My prayer is that the lives lost will not be in vain but in fact there will be stronger gun control laws and funds for mental health help for those in need. New York is a leader in this effort. How do we influence the rest of the nation to finally “get it” and stop the NRA rolling over the political leaders in Congress! I felt transplanted to the Caribbean as I sat on the outdoor balcony of the ocean, the restaurant inside the spectacularly located Crescent beach Club in beautiful bayville. My friend rhona and I celebrated Father’s Day with her son Mathew who manages the hugely successful catering hall that sits on the beach overlooking Long island sound. We visited as the sun was setting. Earlier in the day I had visited my son Josh who lives on the waterfront of the east river then I was off to the LiC flea on the anable basin. The day was spent from one waterfront to another. Each time I visit Ocean, I’m impressed with the quality of the food. Their sushi chef has returned and creates classic favorites. This evening, sitting outside at the sushi bar, I had my “must-have” choice, a hand roll of spicy tuna and avocado. It was prepared perfectly with the freshest tuna. We moved to a table on the balcony overlooking the calm blue waters of the Long Island Sound and watched the sun set and light up the sky in gorgeous swaths of red light. I felt I was on a movie set with a painted background but it was all real and how lucky to have a great meal while watching the changing colors of the skyline. We were joined by ryan silver who was visiting with his dad before he goes to sleepaway camp. He helped me by showing off the appetizer charcuterie plate of meats cured at the facility. It was a mouthwatering selection of Serrano ham, chorizo, pork rillettes, and coppa and duck prosciutto. We also enjoyed the cheeseboard of Humboldt Fog, Camembert, Stilton blue and Drunken Goat. The names are strange but the flavors are a treat to the palate. For main courses we shared a juicy bone-in ribeye and roasted to perfection chicken. I had my favorite crispy skin salmon presented on a bed of asparagus stalks. No meal is complete without dessert and so we indulged ourselves with the Ocean’s own just-outof the-oven warm brownies topped by whipped cream. Delicious! Mouthwatering! Try it. You will love it, too. Call them at 516-628-3000. Music legends It was extraordinary to hear the voices of aretha franklin, tony bennett and Lady gaga all in one week. I went to the Plaza on the invitation of friends tony and gina argento and her husband John Ciafone to hear the governor and Aretha Franklin. We were supposed to see governor Cuomo but too many critical bills were being negotiated for him to take a break. His mom, Matilda, stood in and got a standing ovation from the business leaders. He did speak to us through the magic of Skype. The disappointment was soon overshadowed by the joy of hearing the legend Aretha Franklin sing her classical favorites. Then, the next day, in the cavernous, stunningly restored radio City Music hall, I had the joy of seeing the pride of Queens, Tony Bennett, sing brilliantly still in his prime. He has seemingly been reborn with his duo performance with Lady Gaga. I had recently bought their CD, “Cheek to Cheek,” a collection of classics with my favorites “i Can’t give You anything but Love” and “anything goes.” So to see the couple on stage was a real treat for me. The theater is enormous with three balconies but it was sold out and no wonder. It was a show to cherish forever. To add to the magnificence of their voices were the seven different theatrical gowns that Lady Gaga wore, each one more jaw-dropping than the last. What a feast for the eyes and ears!
