Incoming high schoolers earn Maspeth Lions awards The Maspeth Lions Club recently presented Community Service Scholarship Awards to graduating eighth-graders from three area elementary schools: St. Adalbert’s in Elmhurst, St. Stanislaus in Maspeth and Our Lady of Hope in Middle Village. The awards were presented to the winning students at each of the schools’ graduation ceremonies held this month. Approximately $2,400 in scholarship funds ($800 per school) were awarded for outstanding community service and continued participation in community projects and activities displayed throughout the school year. This year’s scholarship winners were presented with their scholarship check and certificate and commended on their accomplishment. The winners were as follows: Lynn Drapala and James McGlone from St. Stanislaus; Antonio Zgombic and Stephanie Filip from Our Lady of Hope; and Mikel Jakob Calfoforo, Marcus Dustin Fuentes, Gabriel Ferrin and Michael Boller from St. Adalbert’s. Joseph Papavero of the Maspeth Lions and fellow club members helped present the awards. Glendale Girl Scouts put on puppet show The Sacred Heart Junior Girl Scout Troop 4791 of Glendale earned their Bronze Award this year by writing puppet show scripts based on four popular children stories teaching lessons on friendship, honesty and bullying. They then created puppet characters to bring the scripts to life for several performances at the Ridgewood public library. The Bronze Award is the highest award presented to Junior Girl Scouts and requires 20 community hours. The girls put in 38 hours of time between the creation of scripts, the preparation of puppets, practicing and performing for the children. The library even asked them to come back and perform at the Fun Day at the Ridgewood Library held on June 20. The girls from Troop 479 are pictured above. Midville high schoolers’ lesson on Gatsby Students at Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village gathered in their glamorous “Roaring Twenties” attire at the culmination of their English class’ reading of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” Students re-enacted the time period by creating new reports, researching documentaries and performing songs and dances from the period. They were also invited to attend a Gatsby-themed fundraiser at the Oheka Castle in Huntington, L.I., which supports upkeep of the mansion on Long Island’s “Gold Coast.” Students are pictured at the castle.
