He is the chair of Community Board 5, which serves the communities of western Queens including Glendale, Ridgewood, Maspeth and Middle Village. He is also the president of the Queens Library Foundation, the vice president of the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center board of trustees, a member of the Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District, and a founding member of the Glendale Civilian Observation Patrol (GCOP). As a member of all these organizations, Arcuri is invested in growing and developing the community that he has called home for decades. MOTIVATION: “I live here. I raised my children here. I’m not going anywhere else,” Arcuri said of why he works so hard for his community. “I have to make sure it is livable here.” CAREER: Arcuri is now retired, but he spent 40 years in the construction industry. He started out as an apprentice and ended his career as a senior vice president and project executive for a major international construction firm. During his time in the construction industry, Arcuri helped build some of New York’s major skyscrapers in Manhattan. BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Some of the challenges Arcuri faced during his time as a leader of Queens included “being able to succeed in life. Being able to raise a family in this city,” he said. But the number one challenge he has had to face was “making sure my family is good,” Arcuri said. ACHIEVEMENTS: Arcuri was named one of the 2013 Kings of Queens by The Queens Courier. The Kings of Queens award recognizes top businessmen of Queens for their outstanding leadership and their contributions to the communities that they serve. Arcuri also received the “Good Scout Award” from the Boy Scouts of America, as well as being recognized for his many achievements in the construction industry. PERSONAL LIFE: Arcuri has lived in Glendale for most of his adult life, moving from Flushing with his wife in 1944.
