These exquisite, affordable, handheld snacks are available at Tornado Crepe, a small storefront at 1808 Weirfi eld St. (at the corner with Myrtle Avenue), and yes, they are exactly as imaginative as they sound. Savory or sweet, Tornado Crepe’s menu is full of tempting options for a treat or full meal. From the sweet side, favorites include The Tornado (crushed Oreos, marshmallow, banana, chocolate ice cream and syrup), The Red Mango (fresh strawberries and raspberries, strawberry ice cream and mango syrup) and Purple Rain (blueberries and strawberry with vanilla ice cream, blueberry syrup and almonds). Feeling something a little less sugary? The savory offerings include The Shrimp Avocado (shrimp, avocado, spinach, carrots and edamame), The Sausage (sliced sausage, spinach, carrots, corn and avocado) and The Vegetarian (avocado, spinach, carrots, edamame, corn and sesame dressing). Also on the menu are variety of sweet and refreshing beverages, like bubble tea, snow ice, milk shakes and ice slushies. The crepes have been spinning neighborhood folks into a frenzy since Tornado Crepe’s grand opening on April 1. And while the idea of a Tornado Crepe might make you laugh, it was no April fi rst joke. Owner Mike Zhao says business has been great and they will be expanding to open a second location in Ridgewood in the next few months. He incorporates his Chinese background into crepe creations with fl avors like sesame and green tea, and says he and his friends always wanted to open their own business. Though he lives in Elmhurt, he loves Ridgewood and is glad to be here. Valeria, 8, and Gustavo, 11, siblings and lifelong Ridgewood residents, certainly seemed to agree as they nibbled on a Tokyo Sundae and a Purple Rain, respectively. Their family, who lives within walking distance of the shop, has frequented Tornado Crepe since they opened for weekend treats. Midday is a great time to stop by the restaurant, because they offer an affordable lunch special: one crepe of your choice plus one bubble tea for just $7.50. Well on their way to earning loyal customers in the neighborhood, they offer a stamp card that rewards you with a free tornado on your 11th visit.
