The borough president announced on Monday, June 9, that the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation (GWDC)—which operates the Woodhaven Business Improvement District—will get a $250,000 grant to install new LED (light-emitting diodes) street lamps under the elevated J/Z line running atop Jamaica Avenue. In all, the GWDC received two of seven commercial corridor grants Katz is providing to business improvement districts (BIDs) throughout Queens for streetscape improvements. Suspect Sought For Sex Assault by Robert Pozarycki Police seek the public’s help in finding a man who sexually abused a woman inside a Forest Hills apartment building last Tuesday evening, June 3. The NYPD released last Friday, June 6, a security camera image and a sketch of the suspect. According to law enforcement sources, the attack took place at 6:55 p.m. last Tuesday inside an apartment building in the vicinity of Queens Boulevard and 76th Road. Reportedly, the perpetrator followed a 47-year-old woman into the building, then grabbed her from behind and sexually assaulted her. Police said the perpetrator threw the victim to the ground, then fled from the scene. The incident was reported to the 112th Precinct. The victim was -SEE ABUSE ON PG. 28- getting $75,000 to bring new street trees and plantings to the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard. “The commercial corridors found in the diverse neighborhoods throughout Queens are key assets and economic engines for our borough,” Katz stated. “The funds I am allocating to enhance these commercial corridors will help them maximize their potential as retail centers and civic gathering places.” “The addition of plantings with trees and the new street lighting along Jamaica Avenue is so very welcome,” said Maria A. Thomson, the GWDC’s executive director. “The greenery will enhance our community of Woodhaven and the -SEE GRANTS ON PG. 26- E-Waste Recycling Day In Woodside Dozens of residents discarded old computer equipment, cell phones, printers and other unused electronic equipment at a successful E-Recycling spring cleaning day on Saturday, May 31, in Woodside. Assemblywoman Margaret Markey and Rep. Joseph Crowley hosted the day outside the Boulevard Gardens parking lot on 30th Avenue.
