James Szala got the start for Haller and Haller. D&A jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but Szala got out of the jam and left the bases loaded as he struck out the last batter looking. After a shaky start, Szala found his groove, and went on to strike out the side in each of his three innings pitched. After Szala reached his pitch limit, Haller turned to Ryan Regan, who finished the third, by throwing a single pitch for strike three. Regan worked the final inning for the save, striking out the side and only yielding two walks while on the mound. The Haller and Haller offense was explosive, scoring five in the first, adding one in the second and third and finally putting the game out of reach with 11 runs in the fourth. Joseph Pennolino was 1-2 with a two walks and four runs scored. Szala went 2-4 with a long two-run homer to start the fourth to aid his own cause. Joseph Labarbara was 3-3, including a double and long triple, with a walk and three runs scored. Dean Butkiewicz lined a single to right; he went 1-2 with a run scored. Nicholas Audelo added two walks and a run. The Crown Awaits California Chrome Set For Historic Bid In Saturday’s Belmont Stakes by Robert Pozarycki Hoping to see the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years, tens of thousands will converge on Belmont Park this Saturday, June 7, to witness the 146th Belmont Stakes featuring California Chrome. The California-bred colt trained byArt Sherman and ridden by Victor Espinoza rose to racing stardom in the last five weeks after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Last Saturday,May 31, he put in his final workout before the big race at Belmont Park. This is the first Triple Crown bid at Belmont Park since 2008, when Big Brown faltered in the “Test of the Champion.” I’ll Have Another’s chance to capture the Triple Crown in 2012 was spoiled the day before the Belmont Stakes, when he was scratched and retired due to a leg injury. If all goes well this time around, California Chrome will enter the starting gate Saturday afternoon at about 6:52 p.m., with a 1 1/2 mile circuit around the Belmont oval— and 10 rivals—standing in the way of a Triple Crown sweep. The challengers include Wood Memorial Stakes winner Wicked Strong; Kentucky Derby runner-up Commanding Curve; Preakness Stakes second-place finisher Ride On Curlin; and Tonalist, winner of the Peter Pan Stakes, the local prep for the Belmont Stakes. With good weather forecast and a multi-million dollar stakes undercard, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) anticipates a crowd potentially exceeding 100,000. Parking is available at Belmont, but those thinking about heading to the track on the Queens/Nassau border this Saturday are advised to use public transportation. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) will provide 18 extra trains from Penn Station to Belmont Park, stopping at Woodside and Jamaica along the way. There will also be 18 additional trains operating to Belmont Park fromAtlantic Terminal in downtown Brooklyn. For more information, visit www.nyra.com. Nicolas Maccio was the only player not to cross the plate for Haller and Haller, but had an RBI in Haller’s five run first. Ryan Regan rounded out the offense with a single, double and two runs. Stephen Abuso was moved to the 30 day disabled list with a broken hand suffered in practice a week earlier. He will be missed for the remainder of the season. With the season running short, Haller and Haller is focused on finishing the season strong and preparing for the playoffs. 61 • TIMES, THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2014 See The Field On Pg. 62
