TIMES, THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2014 • 6 Council Passes Vision Zero Bills Package To Make Streets Safer by Robert Pozarycki Within the days ahead, Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to sign a package of traffic and pedestrian safety bills and resolutions the City Council overwhelmingly passed during its stated meeting last Thursday, May 29, at City Hall. “From curbing speeding to holding dangerous drivers accountable, these bills are a major step forward for our Vision Zero initiative,” de Blasio said in a statement, referring to the Vision Zero initiative to institute street safety and enforcement measures on the city’s roadways and reduce fatal accidents. “They will protect families and make our neighborhoods safer.” “This comprehensive legislative package will make our streets safer and save countless lives,” added City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley, who sponsored two resolutions in the package passed last Thursday. “Through stricter traffic regulations and enforcement, New Yorkers will think twice before breaking the rules.” Crowley’s Resolution 6 call upon the state legislature and governor to increase penalties against reckless drivers involved in accidents -SEE ZERO ON PG. 28- Muggers Push Senior To Ground In H. Beach Swiped Pocketbook And Cell Phone by Noah Zuss Two suspects are wanted by the NYPD in connection with the mugging of a 73-year-old woman in Howard Beach Last Tuesday, May 27, police reported. According to law enforcement sources, the incident occurred at around 3:20 p.m., in the vicinity of 153rd Avenue and 88th Street last Tuesday, May 27. The suspects reportedly stole $100 and a cell phone from the victim during the mugging. As the victim was walking on the sidewalk with a cart full of groceries, authorities said, a female suspect approached her from behind and grabbed her pocketbook, which contained cash and a cell phone. Heist The man pictured at right is wanted by police for robbing a Long Island City bank last Tuesday afternoon, May 27. Reportedly, the heist occurred at 3:30 p.m. at the HSBC branch located at 22-15 43rd Ave. Law enforcement sources said the crook— described as a Hispanic male between 30 and 35 years of age, standing 6’-tall and weighing 230 lbs. with a mustache and a heavy build—walked into the location and passed a demand note to a teller. After receiving over $4,200 from the employee, authorities noted, the bandit fled in an unknown direction. Officers from the 108th Precinct responded to the scene; there were no injuries. Reportedly, the suspect was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, blue jeans, white sneakers, a blue button-down shirt and dark sunglasses.
