It’s an event on the top floor, with amazing views of the Manhattan skyline, at Mutual of america headquarters. The casual lunch of sandwiches donated by John Catsimatidis, the group’s chair, means that 100 percent of the $150 ticket price goes directly to PAL. A few months ago, Mayor de blasio spoke about his pride in the Police Department, and this month, steve forbes, a perennial candidate for president and head of his family’s publishing empire, spoke. But it’s not just about the speaker but also networking with the interesting people who attend. Most of all, it’s the knowledge that every dollar helps an important service to the community. The stunning atrium of the Museum of the Moving image at the kaufman astoria studios hosted a gala to pay tribute to and to raise money for aPaC’s important work bringing talented performers to the community. The museum has a 267-seat theater that hosted a musical performance by a professional group of singers who held the audience spellbound. We were there to pay tribute to honorees City Councilman Jimmy van bramer and rodgers and Hammerstein President ted Chapin. I loved that Jimmy brought his mom on to the stage to share his moment in the “sun.” She seemed to beam joy to every corner of the room and was bursting with pride. We are proud of him as he professionally and powerfully serves the City Council as its majority leader. Mr. Chapin, who is responsible for protecting the brand of the musical geniuses Rodgers and Hammerstein, talked about the new production of my all-time favorite (I played Anna in my camp production ) “the king and i.” It was first produced on Broadway in 1951. He reminded us that although the story is placed in the 1860s, the issue of a woman having a contract and standing up for it still resonates today. The songs are as relevant today as when it was written more than half a century ago! How I adored “shall we Dance?” and particularly “whenever i feel afraid, i whistle a Happy tune.” I can’t wait to see it right here on Broadway. Celebrating our holidays For my family, Passover is a time for gathering together and I know my Christian friends celebrate easter the same way. For all of us they happily coincided. This year I had the seder at my house. It is a service of prayers before the meal that reminds us of our flight from egypt as we fled from slavery. As part of the reading of the Haggadah, we ask, “Why is this night different from all other nights?” And the children participate by asking four questions that are then answered. I missed my stu leading the prayers – it was left to me to do it! But I was thrilled to welcome my cousin Michael kornberg from La Jolla, California, and his two children, as well as samantha’s in-laws and old friend Marion Calix. We were a two-table crowd! The highlight of the evening for the children is to find the afikomen. It’s a piece of matzo hidden at the beginning of the reading of the Haggadah. Its power is that the Seder can’t be completed without it and the tradition is that the children must find it. When they do, they are given a prize (usually cash). Well, they had so much fun searching for it I had to re-hide it for them eight times! It wasn’t “by the book” but they were having so much fun I broke the “rule” and adapted. To laugh. To love. To enjoy time together is a precious thing. It’s the same no matter what your religion. I believe spring is when life begins anew for nature and for us! Rejoice in its beauty and enjoy!
