42 MARCH 16, 2017 RIDGEWOOD TIMES WWW.QNS.COM SPORTS The Mary Louis Academy captures State title Photo via Facebook/TheMaryLouisAcademy The Mary Louis Academy recently won the Catholic High School Athletic Association New York State “AA” Championship in a thrilling 66-55 overtime Queens College Knights women’s basketball captures team’s fi rst Regional Title The Queens College Knights women’s basketball team made history yet again on Monday, March 13, as they punched their ticket to the Elite Eight by defeating the Molloy College Lions, 70-60, to capture the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship for the fi rst time in the program’s history. Senior Madison Rowland was named East Regional Most Outstanding Player aft er scoring a game-high 24 points and adding 13 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. Meanwhile, redshirt senior MacKenzie Rowland was named to the All-Tournament Team after recording her Division II-leading 22nd double-double of the season with 20 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. It was a low-scoring, back-and-forth fi rst quarter as both teams exchanged leads, but the Knights ended the fi rst up, 12-8. Queens came out fi ring to start the second quarter, opening the period on a 10-1 run. Aft er falling behind 22-9, the Lions eventually found their groove and lowered the defi cit to only four points aft er a 9-0 run. The Knights, however, ended the half on a 12-2 run, taking a 30-20 lead into halft ime. Molloy came out of the break strong, cutting the defi cit to six at 32-26 early into the second half, but Queens scored the next six points to take a 12-point lead. The two teams went back-andforth, as the lead remained in double fi gures, and Queens found itself up, 52-41, going into the fourth quarter. The fi nal quarter was much of the same from both teams, trading buckets, but in the end the Knights came out on top, 70-60, to take the regional crown. Queens College advances to the Elite Eight (National Quarterfi nals), which will take place on Tuesday, March 21, in Columbus, OH. victory over Monsignor Scanlan High School.
