Consumer Banking Safety Tips from Your Local Community Bank ATM Safety Tips Be alert and quick – have your card ready; don’t get distracted looking for it Inspect the ATM or credit card reader before using it. Be suspicious if you see anything loose, crooked, or damaged, or if you notice scratches or adhesive tape residue. Skimming devices are often placed on or near the card reader so be aware of any unusual looking material or obstructions to the ATM or vestibule. Never count or display large amounts of cash near the ATM - wait until you leave the ATM and are in a safe place. Be mindful of using ATMs in tourist areas or at gas stations – they are popular targets for skimmers. Keep your card in a safe place and never share your pin with anyone. Also, we recommend covering the keypad with your other hand to prevent possible skimming cameras from recording your pin #. At the drive-up – remain in your car and keep doors locked. Keep your car running and roll your window up after you complete your transaction. Online/Phone Safety Tips When shopping or conducting banking online, we encourage you to only use trusted sites and limit the use of public computers or unsecured Wi-Fi. Be careful when shopping online and beware of unsolicited calls. Don’t give out personal information over the phone unless you initiate the phone call. Beware of phishing e-mails and texts. Avoid opening or clicking on links from unknown senders. Also, never input personal information or your username/passwords - these are typical red flags. Be sure to install the latest anti-virus/malware software and use strong passwords. Identity Theft Protection Tips Safeguard your personal information i.e. social security, birthdate, medical records, account information etc. Collect mail promptly. Ask the post office to put your mail on hold when you are away from home. Also, consider switching to e-statements - they are more secure than paper delivery. Shred things like receipts, account statements, and expired cards, to prevent “dumpster divers” from getting your personal information.
