SCHOOL MONEY FIGHT BREWING Pols Want More Funds; Gov. Wants Reform Eighty lawmakers—including Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, who chairs the Assembly Education Committee—signed a letter to Cuomo urging him to provide $2.2 billion in this year’s budget for education, reversing the state’s recent trend of cutbacks. The lawmakers also voiced their support for providing an additional $250 million toward expanding universal prekindergarten programs statewide. According to the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE), schools in the state’s poorest communities have been shortchanged in recent years. In the 2012-13 school year, these districts received $8,733 less per student than more affluent districts across the Empire State. The Campaign for Fiscal Equity, a group of New York City parents seeking additional state support, filed a lawsuit in 1993 seeking to end the economic disparities in public education.
