CLEARER PLAN FOR BLVD. BUS Board 9 Hears More On Select Service Representatives from the city Department of Transportation (DOT) and MTA were on hand to deliver a joint Design Concepts Briefing to the board and community members regarding Select Bus Service lanes along Woodhaven and Cross Bay Boulevards. The presentation included a review of the three proposed roadway design ideas, as well as a project schedule. The facts and figures presented in the Design Concepts Briefing were based on the existing Q52 and Q53 limited bus service. According to the report, roughly 400,000 people reside along the 14.4-mile corridor, which stretches from Woodside to Rockaway. Reportedly, an estimated 43 percent of this population do not own a car, while 60 percent commute via public transit. The Woodhaven Boulevard SBS aims to foster quicker, more reliable bus service while improving traffic flow and creating safer streets for pedestrians. The report estimates that roughly 30,000 bus riders commute along the corridor daily. Board 9 encompasses two out of the top five busiest Q52/Q53 bus stops along the route: Jamaica Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. According to the representatives, an estimated 10,000 bus riders utilize both bus stops on a daily basis. Armed Heist by Robert Pozarycki Rather than give in to an armed robber’s demands, two employees at a Forest Hills phone store locked themselves in an closet and waited for the suspect to leave during a failed stickup on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 18, police reported. Law enforcement sources said the trouble began at 4:30 p.m. Sunday inside the Verizon Wireless store at 98-16 Metropolitan Ave. Reportedly, a male suspect walked into the shop, confronted the two workers and displayed a firearm. Police said he threatened to shoot the employees if they refused to let him into the locked storage area. Authorities said the clerks instead walked into the storage area and locked the gate behind them. Moments later, the gunman left the scene on foot in an unknown direction. Officers from the 112th Precinct responded to the incident. No injuries were reported. CERT Holds Elmhurst Info Session The Queens Community Board 4 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) met at the Queens Center Mall last Thursday, Jan. 15, to welcome their newest members. The meeting also gave updated information pertaining to CERT training. On Saturday, Jan. 3, at 1 p.m. the suspect (at right)—identified as a 25 to 30-year-old black male, standing 6’-tall with a skinny build—reportedly entered a business in the mezzanine area of the Woodside-61st Street station and allegedly exposed himself to the 22-year-old employee, police reported. When another customer entered the store, the suspect fled the location. There were no injuries, officers determined.
