(photos: Marcin Zurawicz) by Anthony Giudice The 2015 John Moore Subnovice Basketball Tournament Sponsored by Glendale Kiwanis crowned champions on Sunday, Jan. 18, at St. Pancras School in Glendale. The tournament showcased 16 third grade teams—10 boys teams and 6 girls teams—from nearby parishes in the Catholic Youth Organization. The schools involved were: St. Pancras, Sacred Heart, St. Margaret, Our Lady of Hope, St. Matthias, St. Adalbert, St. Mary’s of Winfield and St. Stanislaus. The girls’ champions are St. Pancras, who beat out the St. Margaret girls in the final round. The boys’ champions are St. Stan’s Blue, who defeated Sacred Heart in the championship stage of the tournament. The boy’s special awards were handed out after the tournament. The most valuable player award went to Joseph Ching of St. Stan’s Blue. The 2015 John Moore Sportsmanship Award was won by Allen Watson of Sacred Heart. The sportsmanship awards for the boys’ teams were given to: Connor Johnson (St. Stan’s Blue), John Magna (St. Stan’s White), Kuja Radoncic (St. Stan’s White), Lucas Maziarz (St. Pancras Red), Gabriel Paredes (St. Pancras Gold), David Lora (St. Matthias), Dorian Demiri (St. Adalbert), Jace Guanieri (Our Lady of Hope), Christopher Felle (Our Lady of Hope) and Cazim Muratovic (St. Margaret). The special awards for the girls were announced after the final game. The most valuable player award went to Brianna Ameuta of St. Pancras. The 2015 John Moore Sportsmanship Award was won by Keira Ross of St. Pancras. The girls’ sportsmanship awards were presented to: Leila Muratovic (St. Margaret), Tara Brennan (St. Mary’s Winfield), Maeve Fitzgerald (St. Adalbert), Samantha Muller (Our Lady of Hope) and Erin Shields (Our Lady of Hope). The double elimination tournament was held over a 10 day span, from Jan. 9, to Jan. 18. John Moore, for who the tournament is named after, was the girls’ basketball and softball coach at St. Pancras for almost 20 years, and a retired full inspector with the NYPD who died last October. The parish and school named the basketball tournament after him to honor his memory. Sports Stars France; a four-night stay at the Dominican Republic golf resort Casa de Campo; and much more.
