Winter Classic at Citi Field proved
freezing — but fun — for Ranger fans
BY THE RIDGEWOOD TIMES STAFF

Queens may have been colder than
a meat locker on New Year’s Day,
but that didn’t stop more than
40,000 fans from packing Citi Field
for the NHL’s 10th Winter Classic game.
New York Rangers fans were out in full
force to see their Broadway Blueshirts
battle the Buff alo Sabres. They went home
freezing but happy, as the Rangers eked
out a 3-2 victory with a game-winning
overtime goal from J.T. Miller.
Since the NHL began playing
outdoor games in 2009, the Rangers
have played four games in the great
outdoors and have won them all. That
includes two games against the rival
New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders
at Yankee Stadium in 2014.
It was the fi rst-ever professional
hockey game at Citi Field, home of the
New York Mets, which has also hosted
everything from soccer matches and
concerts featuring artists including
Paul McCartney and Lady Gaga.
If the sold-out, bundled-up crowd
at Monday’s game had anything to say
about it, it shouldn’t be too long before
before Citi Field gets another Winter
Classic.
