50-story hotel planned for LIC will be largest of its kind in the outer boroughs
BY ANGELA MATUA

A 1,260-room hotel slated for
construction in Long Island
City will be the largest hotel
built in the outer boroughs.
The Toyoko Inn at 24-09 Jackson Ave.
will stretch 50 stories and when completed,
will be the ninth largest hotel in
the city, according to The Real Deal. The
hotel will be located right next to the Citi
building and across the street from the
Court Square stop on the 7 line.
The Japanese developers filed
plans to construct the hotel last year
and purchased the property in 2007
for $18 million. Toyoko Inn, a chain of
hotels founded in Japan in 1986, fi rst
announced plans to build a 680-room
hotel in Long Island City in 2010.
An analysis by The Real Deal found
that the Toyoko Inn will be the only
hotel featured in the top 10 by room
count not located in Manhattan. Its
analysis also found that most of the
top 20 hotels in the outer boroughs are
located in Queens; the biggest hotel is
LaGuardia Airport Marriott in East
Elmhurst with 450 rooms.
The chain, which has locations in
Japan and South Korea, is known to
charge reasonable prices for its rooms,
from 4480 to 7980 yen or $35 to $70
per night. The chain has expanded to
Cambodia, Philippines and Germany.
The Long Island City location will be its
fi rst in the United States, and a location
in France is slated for a 2018 opening.
President Maiko Kuroda took over
the company from her father in 2008
and has hired women almost exclusively
to run the company’s more than 260
hotels around the world. According to
the Japan Times, 97 percent of the company’s
hotels are managed by women.
It’s not clear when the Long Island
City location is scheduled to open.
