New Horizon Counseling Center helps homeless in Arverne BY SALVATORE LICATA [email protected] @sal_licata1 In the season of giving, one counseling center gave the gift of a holiday meal to the homeless. Over 300 individuals attended the event, which took place on Dec. 17 at the Bridge Beach Residence homeless shelter, located on 65th St. in Arverne. The New Horizon Counseling Center, the organization that hosted the event, does a lot of work with the shelter, helping the less fortunate find doctors, coordinate benefits they may be entitled to, and assist in the search for housing and other social supports. “The purpose of the event was two-fold. Most importantly, it was a small way in which New Horizon Counseling Center could give back to the community during the holidays,” said Jeremy Merrill, director of care coordination for the center. “This event allowed New Horizon to raise awareness on how we can help those in need of care coordination.” The event was hosted in coordination with the 101st Beach Deli, which provided 6-foot-hero sandwiches and some side dishes for the people in attendance. Along with a holiday meal, each resident of the shelter got a gift from the center. “New Horizon Counseling Center is a community-based organization with helping those in need being a core principle upon which we operate,” Merrill said. “As an organization we enjoy a great sense of accomplishment and fulfillment when we are helping those in need.” To learn more about the Care Coordination program provided by the New Horizon Counseling Center, email [email protected] or call 718- 945-CARE (2273).
