Steven Shimabuku was found stabbed in the torso at about 9:15 p.m. on Dec. 19 at 90th Street near 35th Avenue. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Shimabuku was just steps from his apartment when he was stabbed, according to the Daily News. He was able to make it back to his home, where his girlfriend called 911. As of press time, there have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing. Manhattan man faces 11 years in prison for robbing three elderly Queens women A Manhattan man will soon be sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to two separate Queens home invasions, involving three women, one as old as 97, according to the district attorney’s office. “One’s home is their castle and should be a place of refuge and safety, not a crime scene,” District Attorney Richard Brown said. “In robbing his victims inside their homes, the defendant stole more than just money and personal property—he stole his victims’ security.” Salvador Morales, 59, pleaded guilty on Dec. 15, to first- and second-degree burglary before Queens Supreme Court Justice Elise Koenderman, prosecutors said. The judge indicated she would sentence Morales to 11 years in prison on Jan. 23. Morales, in pleading guilty, admitted to the two home invasions, where he targeted three women, ages 72, 73 and 97. On April 5, he followed the two younger victims from a HSBC bank branch on Kissena Boulevard to their Flushing apartment, according to the district attorney. Morales, who was wearing a yellow construction helmet, white surgical mask and white surgical tape on several fingers, entered their apartment and pushed them to the floor. He then fled with the 72-year-old woman’s handbag, which contained more than $1,000 that had just been withdrawn from the bank. The other woman was taken to the hospital with a fractured leg. Morales targeted his third victim on April 19 by also following the 97-year-old woman into her building, Brown said. Wearing a surgical mask, Morales entered her Sunnyside apartment by pretending he had been sent by the landlord to check for leaks. Once inside, he got her to take out a large envelope full of cash by asking if she had change for a $100 bill, and then convinced her to take off her rings while checking the faucet. While she wasn’t looking, he fled the apartment with the rings and the envelope, which contained $700 in cash. Bayside dad charged with assaulting 4-month-old son A 28-year-old Bayside resident is charged with assaulting his 4-month-old baby, causing the infant to suffer brain damage that has left him in “grave condition,” authorities said. Jagsheer Singh was taking care of his baby Nevin Janduher, while his wife and the baby’s mother, Dr. Reena Malhotra, a radiologist, was at work at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, according to District Attorney Richard Brown. When Malhotra left home around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 19, the baby was healthy. When she returned around 6:15 a.m. the next day, she did not check on the baby and went to bed instead. According to statements made by Singh, the baby was fine when he woke up around 7 a.m. When he checked on him around 7:30 a.m., he found that the baby had defecated, and so he took him into the shower. Shortly after, the baby fell off the changing table, which was 4 feet off the ground, Singh said. He also stated that he did not tell his wife about the fall at that time. Around 8 a.m., he found that the baby was having difficulty breathing. That’s when, he said, he woke up his wife and called 911. Baby Nevin was first taken to Flushing Hospital Medical Center and then transferred to Cohen Children’s Medical Center. According to the district attorney’s office, medical personnel examined the baby and found that his injuries were consistent with non-accidental abusive head trauma and were not consistent with the injuries that would have occurred if he had simply fallen from the changing table, as Singh claimed. Singh has been charged with first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned on Sunday, where bail was set at $200,000. “The baby is in grave condition and if he does not survive the charges will be upgraded,” Brown said. Photos courtesy of NYPD
