Engelke, leader of Astoria Financial Corp., dies at 76 BY ROSS G. BELSKY [email protected] @QueensCourier George L. Engelke Jr., former chairman, president and chief executive officer of Astoria Financial Corporation whose career at the financial firm spanned four decades, died on Dec. 13 of natural causes. He was 76. Engelke, of Garden City, a certified public accountant by profession, oversaw the growth of Astoria into one of the largest Long Island-based banking companies, expanding to 87 branches during his time at the helm. He converted the bank to public ownership in 1993, then expanded its reach by acquiring Fidelity New York Savings Bank, Greater New York Savings Bank and Long Island Savings Bank. After serving as CEO of Astoria starting in 1989, Engelke retired in 2012. His successor, Ralph Palleschi, said of Engelke’s legacy, “His conservative operating philosophy helped Astoria successfully navigate through many varied economic cycles, particularly the most recent financial crisis, during which Astoria remained profitable throughout.” Engelke continued to serve as the CEO of First Long Island Investors, which he co-founded. A champion of civil betterment and home ownership, he was a member of the board of directors of the Community Preservation Corporation, and director of the Advisory Board of Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City. Engelke was also a former chairman of The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York and chairman of the Savings Bank Association of New York State. He was also a former member of the board of directors of the New York Bankers Association and served as a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council. He was an active member of the board of trustees of Long Island University. His alma mater, Lehigh University, benefited from his unwavering support. His former coworkers and employees expressed nothing but fondness for his memory, as the company stated, “His kindness toward all those he met was inspirational.” Engelke is survived by his wife Sandra, his children, Jennifer and Courtney, his brother Roger, and nine grandchildren. A funeral was held at the Community Church of East Williston. Memorial plaque honors beloved couple BY THE QUEENS COURIER STAFF [email protected] The Hollis Hills Civic Association unveiled a memorial plaque honoring two longtime residents of the neighborhood on Sunday, Dec. 7. David and Marion Millet were active members of the civic association until they passed away a few years ago. The association installed the plaque in their honor at the corner of Union Turnpike and 220th St. It reads, “In recognition of David & Marion Millet’s extraordinary service, loyalty and devotion to the Hollis Hills community.” Those who attended the ceremony included Councilman Mark Weprin, Assemblyman David Weprin, Congresswoman Grace Meng and CB 11 District Manager Susan Seinfeld. The Millets were residents of the Hollis Hills community since 1955. David was a mechanical engineer and Marion a schoolteacher. They first got involved in community work when they saw that a contractor had left the triangle on 221st St. and Hartland Ave. in disarray after a project. They tracked down the correct people and got the matter resolved. Since then, they have been involved in community work in one way or the other. Both of them served on the executive board of the HHCA since the early ‘90s. The memorial plaque was not the first time the association has honored the Millets. In 2003, the civic association honored them with a special ceremony at Douglaston Manor. It was attended by Assemblyman Mark Weprin and then-Borough President Helen Marshall, among others.
