Best of luck! honors & awards A Con Edison employee from Bayside has received recognition from the YWCA of the City of New York for her professional achievements, civic contributions and leadership. Nancy Shannon, director of Environmental Health and Safety Field Services, received the Academy of Women Leaders Award. Shannon has worked for Con Edison for 24 years. In her current job, she manages the chemical laboratory and directs the company’s response and spill management teams. She was instrumental in starting a program that gives physics and chemistry students at The Summit School the chance to work with Con Edison lab professionals on assignments. “To thrive, our economy needs bright, young minds in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields,” Shannon said. “The goal of our program is to show talented students at The Summit School that they can have productive, rewarding careers in chemistry.” The program is in its third year at Con Edison’s lab in Astoria. Shannon has a Bachelor of Science degree from St. John’s University and is pursuing a master’s in industrial and organizational psychology from Baruch College. celebratory mas On Thursday, December 12, the Holy Cross High School community celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, with a Mass led by Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn Paul Sanchez D.D. The President of Holy Cross High School, Father Walter Jenkins, C.S.C. thanked Bishop Sanchez for celebrating the feast with the students. LIONS ROAR The Little Neck –Douglaston Lions Club held its most successful annual dinner dance recently. The Club received tremendous support from the Little Neck, Douglaston and Bayside communities. Two hundred people came out to honor Man of the Year, Hon. Peter J. O’Donoghue, Justice, Supreme Court, Queens County; Christine Kempski, Lion of the Year, and Bernard Karoff, Community Service awardee. The proceeds will be used to help purchase and train a seeing eye dog through the Guide Dog Foundation, as well as other community projects. honors & awards The Louis Armstrong House Museum’s Gala 2013 on December 11 was a night to remember with a special performance by the Grammy Award-winning Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks and an impressive slate of honorees. The museum honored Quincy Jones, Jay Hershenson, Dan Morgenstern and Grace Lawrence with the exclusive “Louie” award for their dedicated work to preserve and promote the cultural legacy of Louis Armstrong.
