For people living with diabetes, the condition
Be a smart shopper while choosing your Medicare plan
It’s always a good idea to shop around.
Cost is an important factor in any purchase,
especially when it comes to health
insurance, but it’s not the only thing to
consider.
Th ere may be dozens of Medicare plans
in your area, all with diff erent costs and
levels of coverage. How much are each
plan’s premiums and deductibles? How
much will you pay for the benefi ts and
services you’re likely to use? Is there a
limit on what you’ll have to pay out-ofpocket
for the year? If you’re currently in
a plan, how does that plan compare to the
other plans that are available? Th inking
about these things will help you make a
smart choice to get good value that meets
your personal health care needs.
Prescription drug coverage is another
thing to consider. Does your health
plan include coverage for prescription
drugs? Or will you need to fi nd a separate
Medicare Part D plan for drug coverage?
How much will your prescriptions cost
under each plan? Does the plan cover the
drugs you take?
Remember, everyone who reaches the
Part D coverage gap (or “donut hole”) will
benefi t from a discount of 65% on covered
brand-name drugs.
Only you can determine what mix of
benefi ts and costs will work best with
your needs and budget, but we can help.
Th e Medicare Plan Finder makes it easy
to compare plans so you can pick a plan
that’s right for you. Aft er you’ve narrowed
your options, call the plans you’re
interested in to get more details about
their benefi ts and services, or check out
their websites.
You have until Dec. 7 to review, compare
and join a 2018 plan.

is a part of their everyday life and one
that impacts many of their decisions, from
balancing what they eat to taking care of
their health. One area that might not be top
of mind for people living with diabetes is life
insurance. Th at’s because many people with
diabetes believe they won’t be able to get life
insurance if they have the condition.
Research shows that nearly 50 percent
of people with diabetes are worried they
will not qualify for a life insurance policy
and another 45 percent assume it’s too
expensive, according to a recent survey
commissioned by John Hancock.1 And
it’s even higher among younger people,
with 68 percent of people ages 25-34 worried
they won’t qualify.
Dispelling the common myth
According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), 9.4 percent
of the U.S. population has diabetes.2
Th is equates to roughly 30 million people.
In addition, another 33.9 percent (84 million)
has pre-diabetes. While people with
diabetes recognize the many benefi ts life
insurance can off er - like providing for
your family, covering fi nal expenses, and
off ering peace of mind - there’s a lot of
confusion about the topic and a concern
that having diabetes will bar them from
getting life insurance.
In reality, more than 90 percent of all
the people with diabetes who sought life
insurance in the past 18 months qualifi ed
with John Hancock. In addition, 88 percent
of those applicants received a standard
or better premium quote.
