ST . FRANCIS PREP STUDENTS CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING BY
GIVING TO THOSE IN NEED
On Thursday, November 9th, Saint Francis Prep’s student body will be hearing presentations from a local
community leader regarding the invaluable service provided her agency. Sister Elisabeth Anne is a
member of the Little Sisters of the Poor, the community of nuns that operates Queen of Peace Residence in
Queens Village. Sister works within the Community Giving Opportunities office, and will be speaking to
Prep’s nearly 2,500 students regarding the efforts of her community, and what the Queen of Peace
Residence provides.
The Queen of Peace Residence’s homepage proclainms, “Come to Queen of Peace Residence and you will
discover a home for the aged that is filled with joy and abounds with activity, a place where a senior can
live life to the fullest every day. “Making the elderly happy is what counts.” The facility is described by,
“Quality care is provided to 80 elderly Residents (60+ years old) who are without financial means, family
or social support. Many seniors come to Queen of Peace as independent Residents residing in subsidized
apartments on the 4th and 5th floors. As their skills decline and they require more assistance, they can
move to a floor where an appropriate level of skilled nursing care is provided. The continuum of services
permits a sense of security throughout life. Once a senior Resident comes to Queen of Peace, they have a
home for the remainder of their years.”
In the past, Prep students have been encouraged to remember Pope Francis' challenge to be people of
mercy and generosity. Past themes of the Prep Thanksgiving Donation Drive were based on a line from the
Franciscan peace prayer, "It is in giving that we receive." Current students will be asked to reflect on the
scripture passage that describes an impoverished widow who gives two small copper coins to the Temple
treasury, and is described as “she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Contributions can be
made from November 9th through 20th to assist Queen of Peace Residence, and other local agencies,
specifically St. Aloysius and Incarnation Catholic Church Food Pantries, Hour Children's House, St. John's
Bread and Life, St. Francis Table at St. Matthias Catholic Church, Queen of Peace Residence, and Presentation
of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish Soup Kitchen.
Prep alum, and current pastor of St. Christopher’s Roman Catholic Church in Baldwin, Father Nicholas
Zientarski will celebrate the school's Thanksgiving Liturgy on Wednesday, November 22nd at 8:30 a.m. in
Prep’s Brother Ralph Clifford Memorial Auditorium. Representatives of each agency will attend the Mass
to receive their donations. Also, a Thanksgiving meal prepared and served by Prep students at Presentation
Soup Kitchen is in the works.
Prep students begin to gather donation for those less
fortunate for Prep’s Annual Thanksgiving Drive
