But with its newest venture -- a retail outlet run out of the entrance of its baking facility -- it hopes to fi nd even more. Just over a year ago, the company decided to move its bakery and company offi ces from Manhattan’s Chelsea Market to Queens. Amy Scherber, owner of Amy’s Bread, wanted a larger facility for her expanding company where it would be easy to load and make deliveries to her Manhattan stores. “We love our space. It’s been really great. We’ve really grown into it,” she said. Around its one-year Long Island City anniversary, in late September, Amy’s Bread decided to launch what Scherber calls a “kiosk.” Open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., it’s a small take-out counter selling coffee, breakfast and lunch items, such as pastries, sandwiches and salads, and of course Amy’s famous bread. “It’s a good thing for the neighborhood because there is not much around here to eat,” Scherbe said, explaining one reason why she decided to start selling food from her 34th Street facility, which is located off 48th Avenue. “All the neighbors are really happy about it,” she said. Scherbe said the lunch business has been particularly growing with around 20 to 25 people coming in every day. Depending on the foot traffi c, said Scherbe, she might expand the retail outlet inside the baking facility or move it to another location in Long Island City. In the future, Scherbe would also like to offer catering from her Long Island City facility, as she already does from her other retail locations in Chelsea Market, Hell’s Kitchen and the West Village. For a menu, visit www.amysbread.com. Prices at the Long Island City retail outlet, located at 48-09 34th Street, are 10 percent off of Amy’s Bread’s regular retail store prices. Hours may vary at the outlet, so please call to confi rm (212-462-4486). Photos courtesy of Amy’s Bread SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS
