CARL CLARKE ART www.clarkecarl.com Carl Clarke has been painting for the past 10 years, and is bringing his paintings to the LIC Flea this year. Clarke paints landscapes and figures, but is more into abstract natures and the exposition of color relationships than painting in “real life” detail. Although Clarke has a long history of painting, the LIC Flea is the first market he’s been a part of, and he is looking forward to showcasing his works this Saturday and Sunday. Carl Clarke Art will not be selling any artwork at the Flea, but rather showcasing it in order to create a name for himself. For more information on Carl Clarke Art, visit www.clarkecarl.com. METROPOLIS SOAP COMPANY www.metropolissoap.com Metropolis Soap Company is a manufacturer of artisan skincare. What makes Metropolis stand out from other skincare companies is that its entire line is vegan, which makes its products more eco-friendly and not harmful to the environment. It offers a broad range of items, ranging from award-winning lip creams, bath salts, whipped shea butter, and five different scents of aromatherapy candles. The aromatherapy candles are all made with soy wax, and the shea butters are Metropolis Soapy Company special brand of lotion. Metropolis Soap Company will be at the LIC Flea this Saturday and Sunday, and more information can be found on its website, www.metropolissoapcompany.com. HANDPIE www.handpienyc.com Jeff Zito is originally from Texas, and has been baking all of his life. However, he always wanted to develop his own interpretation of southern baking recipes he learned with his mother, and so he and his wife opened Handpie last July. Handpie is a handheld pie similar to a croissant or an empanada, with flaky, fluffy dough and a sweet and savory taste. Handpie’s chicken pot pie sells out every weekend at the LIC Flea, and other best sellers include the sausage and white gravy pie, seasonal items such as pumpkin pie, and the birthday cake pie, which is a vanilla pie crust with a birthday cake baked inside with jam and frosting. Handpie will be at the LIC Flea this Saturday and Sunday, and more information can be found on its website, ww.handpienyc.com. KAFE CON ARTE www.kafeconarte.com If there are two things Pablo Naranjo loves in this world -- coffee and art. Naranjo is an illustrator and a painter, and not only creates a vast array of different artwork, but also designs and manufactures his own products through Kafe Con Arte, which he founded in 2009. Because his grandmother started her own embroidering company in the 1970s, Naranjo decided to learn his craft from her, and now offers an incredible range of products. His best-selling items include his hand-made pillows, kitchen tiles and bandanas, which all feature his artwork on them. Kafe Con Arte is a one-man operation that offers unparalleled quality and professionalism, and is signed up to be at the LIC Flea every Saturday and Sunday in October. It has been five months since LIC Flea & Food opened and with every weekend filled with growing amounts of success, there is still one more chance to make it your weekend destination. The last two days of this year’s LIC Flea will be on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 at 5-25 46th Avenue in Long Island City. On Saturday, CrossFit Long Island City will be hosting the Barbells for Boobs fundraiser at the LIC Flea from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Barbells for Boobs is a nonprofit breast cancer organization founded by Zionna Munoz in 2009, after her best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Its mission is to offer funding through the Mammograms In Action Grant Program for qualified low-income men and women who need screening and/or diagnostic procedures. Fundraisers are now held at different CrossFit locations throughout the country. Munoz will attend the LIC Flea CrossFit workout. During the event, participants will take part in a CrossFit workout known as “Grace,” where men and women perform benchmark exercises known as Clean and Jerks. Coaches will be available to assist anyone new to the CrossFit routine. “In CrossFit we help each other and rise to the occasion,” said Vadim Noskov, CrossFit LIC owner and head coach. “Cancer is such a thing that there is not a single family in the world that isn’t affected by it.” In order to participate, visit crossfitlic.com, where you can make a donation and then reserve your spot in one of the “heats,” taking place every 30 minutes on Saturday. You can also donate at www.fundraise.barbellsforboobs. org/fundraise/team?ftid=24844 or onsite at the LIC Flea. “It’s helping a great cause and will also bring our community a little bit closer,” said Noskov. On Sunday , LIC Flea will hold a bar crawl through Long Island City offering $1 half pint beers at Rockaway Brewery, Alewife, Open Door and a few other locations. In order to participate, you must come by LIC Flea and pick up a wristband. LIC Flea will be open this weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will back in Long Island City in April, 2014. So come on down to LIC Flea & Food this weekend to explore vendors, give back while getting a CrossFit workout and enjoy some Sunday drinks with family and friends.
