Decide which community projects deserve funding at four upcoming neighborhood assemblies in northeast Queens BY SUZANE MONTEVERDI [email protected] @smont76 How would you use $1 million in funding to improve your community? Residents of the 19th Council District are invited to speak out, collaborate with neighbors and directly decide which projects should be put on year three’s participatory budgeting ballot at four upcoming neighborhood assemblies hosted by Councilman Paul Vallone. Last year’s winning projects included improvements to the Bayside High School Music Educational Complex and auditorium upgrades at both J.H.S. 194 and P.S. 193 in Whitestone. Funding can be used for improvements to schools, streets, parks and any other community spaces. Neighborhood assemblies are scheduled as follows: Bayside — Tuesday, Oct. 4, 7 p.m. at the Castle at Fort Totten (Bayside Historical Society Building), 208 Totten Ave. Little Neck — Thursday, Oct. 6, 7 p.m. at the Community Church of Little Neck, 46-16 Little Neck Parkway. Whitestone — Tuesday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Pastoral Center, 16-34 Clintonville St. College Point — Thursday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m. at Poppenhusen Institute, 114-04 14th Rd. Year two of participatory budgeting (2015-2016) saw over 4,500 votes cast throughout District 19: the largest turnout in all of Queens. Due to the overwhelming response, Vallone’s office allocated $2.25 million — the fourth largest amount in all of NYC — to the top five most voted projects. Based on ideas presented at assemblies and online, budget delegates review community needs across the district and develop project proposals with help from city experts. Volunteers then turn concepts into concrete proposals, and from March 25 to April 2 of next year, a public vote will be held to determine which projects will receive funding. CVS Pharmacy is coming to LIC next year BY ANGELA MATUA [email protected]/@AngelaMatua Developers have been filling Long Island City with new residential projects for several years, but the area is still lacking in some basic services. Now, residents will be able to pick up their prescriptions, snacks, school supplies and more when a CVS comes to Hunters Point South Commons, LIC Talk first reported. The official opening will be sometime in June 2017, according to CVS spokesperson Stephanie Cunha. According to Frank Monterisi, senior vice president of the building’s management company Related Companies, CVS has signed a lease to occupy an 11,218-square-foot ground floor space at 1-50 50th Ave. “CVS Pharmacy will be a great amenity for our residents at Hunter’s Point South and the growing Long Island City community,” Monterisi said. “We look forward to their grand opening in 2017.” Neighboring areas like Astoria and Sunnyside have several Rite Aid and CVS Pharmacies, while Long Island City currently has none. There is a Duane Reade on Fifth Street and most of the pharmacies in the neighborhood such as Nature’s Prescriptions and Vernon Boulevard Pharmacy are independently owned.
