The department closed the Fresh Meadows business on Sept. 25 for six “critical violations,” according to the inspection report. The report stated that a variety of vermin inhabited the business, located on Union Turnpike, including filth flies, flesh flies and cockroaches. The Health Department will typically close a business for receiving a violation score of 28 or higher. King Yum received a 65. On Sept. 29, according to a King Yum worker, the department conducted another inspection and, finding it suitably sterile, allowed owner Robin Ng to open his business again. Ng couldn’t be immediately reached for comment, but in a previous article by The Courier, Ng explained how his business has been able to stay open for 60 years. It has been King Yum’s “good food, consistency and good value” that has kept the restaurant alive in the everchanging food industry, he said. “I grew up working here with my brother. We managed the place as teenagers. I did everything from washing dishes to peeling shrimp,” Ng said. “We’ve been here for 60 years. We must be doing something right.” FLOWERS FOR EVERY OCCASION Special Bouquets for the Jewish Holidays • Bridal Packages Available-Call for Special Rates • VERY large selection of roses and fl owers • Over 10,000 Roses Available • Bouquet Deliveries • Beautiful Floral Arrangements Also perfect for Bar Mitzvahs, Communions, Sweet 16s, Funerals, and all your Special Occasions. 10% Off Your Order when you Mention this ad exp 10/15/2014 Call to place Your Order 718-264-3111 646-642-6118 BosmatFlowers.com Bosmat Flowers 186-11 Union Turnpike Fresh Meadows, NY 11366 CALL ANYTIME Flowers Group exhibition ‘Cultural Canopies’ to open at Courier/Mittman Gallery BY QUENS COURIER STAFF [email protected] @QueensCourier The borough’s diversity is being honored in a new photography exhibition coming to Bayside. “Cultural Canopies,” curated by Vida Sabbaghi, will be opening Oct. 9 at the Courier/Mittman Gallery, located at 38-15 Bell Blvd. The exhibition, inspired by Steven Hoelderich’s photography book “Cultural Canopies of Queens,” features images that display characterizations of Queens, including store canopies in different languages and in an array of colors. The photos also show the diverse stores found in the borough. Six photos from Hoelderich’s book are part of the exhibition. Along with showing the urban landscape of Queens, organizers also invited photographers to exhibit photographs from throughout the tristate area that could apply to all New Yorkers. For example, photographer Norma Colon took a photo of a person walking a dog in Brooklyn, looking to appeal to dog owners all throughout the city. The contributing artists to the exhibition are Steven Hoelderich, Patricia Samuel, Leah Thornton, Norma Colon, Jason Mangual, Maeen Saleh and Linda Allen. As a way to interact readers with the exhibition, there will be a photo contest with a prize of dinner for two provided by The Queens Courier. To participate in the contest, submit a community-inspired photo with a description of no more than 50 words to [email protected]. The deadline for submission is Oct. 31. The opening reception for “Cultural Canopies” will take place Oct. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. NEW FOX TV SERIES ‘GOTHAM’ FILMS IN FORT TOTTEN The new FOX television show “Gotham” was filming scenes in Fort Totten on Sept. 30.
