Kudos are in order The two New Yorkers who rushed to the aid of a British tourist who was struck and severely injured by an out-of-control taxi in Manhattan again exemplify that there are people in this city who care enough to want to get involved and help. Both of these guys did what they thought was right, and it certainly was. They deserve recognition from all New Yorkers for their acts of caring, and we sincerely hope that the young lady who they helped will make a full recovery from her severe injuries. Kudos to those two men for their fast actions, which probably did save this woman’s life. John Amato Fresh Meadows A sad day The city council has overridden Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto of stop-and-frisk. Now we will all be unsafe and more innocent children will surely die. More guns will enter our city and the criminal element will rule the streets. Our NYPD will be handcuffed when they try to do their job, which is to serve and protect. Our elderly and young will be in harm’s way. The middle class will move out of New York. Now that in my opinion makes this a very sad day. Frederick R. Bedell Jr. Glen Oaks Village Budget control “The tale of two cities” is in essence government confiscation of wealth, via taxation from the haves to the have nots, growing out of control as advocated by mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio. Sooner or later, the producers of wealth will be outnumbered by the takers. We are becoming perilously close to that point. Those who create wealth and income will eventually go on strike, demanding that they be able to keep more of what they earned. To end this out-of -control spiral, government must destroy all its credit cards and be put on a fiscal diet. A multi- year freeze on spending, balanced budgets and pay-as-you-go spending is the cure. If not, our economy will continue into decline. The result will be a standard of living turning from one of affluence to a third world city with most everyone living in poverty. Larry Penner Don’t be fooled Joe Lhota admits that if he were mayor he wouldn’t have bothered trying to rescue those forlorn kittens stranded on the subway tracks. He would just have had them run over by tons of mutilating steel. That jibes with his demonstrated philosophy of dealing with labor unions. It’s what endears him to senior management, comfy in climate-controlled office suites while their workers sweat bullets in pitch dark tunnels where every tour is a graveyard shift amongst electrocution and sundry other lethal environmental hazards, speeding trains and scurrying rats. Don’t be tricked by this callous dyed-inthe wool overseer, even when he drops by your ethnic nabe during this electoral season to sample jerkies, knishes, kabobs, empanadas, pizza, gyros or whatever his handlers have on tap for him any given day. Ron Isaac Fresh Meadows L’shanah tovah The staff of The Queens Courier and the Schneps Communications Family wish all our readers and advertisers the best for a sweet New Year filled with health, happiness and peace. PRIMARY MOTIVATION Mark your calendars: Tuesday, September 10 is Primary Day. Voting is our American right, and we strongly urge everyone to make his or her way to the polls. There is no excuse. On Election Days, polling places are open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. This year we will be casting our Primary ballots for mayor, public advocate, city comptroller, borough president, city council and even state committee members. If need be, a run-off is scheduled for October 1. In these pages and on our website, www.queenscourier.com, we bring you a comprehensive guide to the candidates – who they are, what they stand for, and what they’ll do, if elected. Read it, learn about the candidates, and make an informed decision. It is up to us to elect those men and women who will lead our city and our borough most effectively. Let your voice be heard. Every vote counts. According to the Board of Elections, you can find your poll site location by calling the voter Phone Bank at 1-866-VOTE-NYC. Since there is nothing worse than voter apathy, be sure that on Tuesday, September 10, voting is your PRIMARY MOTIVATION. TO CATCH A PERV We commend the NYPD for stepping up patrols in Forest Park in the wake of a second sexual attacking involving a taser this year. But they need our help to catch a perv. The latest attack, which police are not sure is related to the earlier incident, happened around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 26 when the victim, a 69-year-old woman, while jogging through the park, was approached by the suspect. She was taken to Queens Hospital Center, where she was treated and released. Police describe the perp as white, 30 to 40 years 0ld, 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with light brown hair and clean shaven. He was wearing a black T-shirt and black sweat pants. A $22,000 reward has been offered for information in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800- 577-TIPS. Please, if you or anyone you know has ANY information, drop a dime. In today’s digital society, we should be able to get this guy – and keep our parks and people safe.
