It’s a reminder of the true potential of students to rise to the challenges of a rigorous education and their ability to obtain academic excellence when they are supported by a teaching staff that’s invested in seeing them succeed. “We expect more of our students,” says John Fruner, principal of St. Joan of Arc. “They are going to work here.” Like many schools, St. Joan of Arc, located in Jackson Heights, implemented the Common Core State Standards. Students take New York State rests in math and English L anguage A rts. E ighth graders take the Algebra Common Core Regents if they enroll in a two days a week after school Algebra 9 class. Hard work is a cornerstone of a St. Joan of Arc education, but students are not expected to go it alone. The elementary school, which operates programs for children from age 3 (Pre-K) through grade 8, offers students an extensive amount of support through an afterschool program that’s open until 7 p.m. Some after school activities include Spanish class for grades 1 to 8, a Friday Art Club, Peer tutoring, and middle school “rap” groups that start with some sort of physical activity. “We’re one of the few in the area that go that late,” Fruner says. “The office is also open until 7 p.m. on school nights, and myself and an office staffer are always there untl then.” Fruner says St. Joan of Arc owes much of its success to the stability of its faculty. “I have teachers who have taught here for 30, 32, even 37 years,” he says. “It is very much a family atmosphere here with generations of families being taught by the same teachers.” The mission of St. Joan of Arc is to educate exceptionally, serve endlessly and dare dreams of the impossible in a welcoming Catholic school community. “Children transform into young women and young men here who value education and learn to care for others,”Fruner says. “They become responsible.” For more information, call (718) 639-9020 or visit www.sjaschoolny. com. at Lehman College White Star Limousine was founded in 1952 and has been family owned and operated for over three generations.
