FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 • BACK TO SCHOOL • THE QUEENS COURIER 69 Academy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award-Winning Artists Kick-Off the 2015-16 Season of QPAC’s 50th Anniversary 50 Years: The Gold Standard in Entertainment Luminaries of the stage and screen will open the 50th Anniversary Season of the Queensborough Grammy and Oscar-winning composer Stephen Schwartz has captivated millions of theatre lovers with his iconic songs from Broadway musicals such as Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, and The Baker’s Wife. He will perform with his friends in an unforgettable afternoon of solos, duos and trios spanning the course of his magnificent 40-year career in Stephen Schwartz and Friends, on September 27 at 3 pm. Next, the charismatic Joy Behar will take the QPAC stage in Me, My Mouth and I, on October 4 at 3 pm. Joy, who won a Daytime Emmy for her work on The View, takes the audience on a journey from her Brooklyn childhood to her successful career not only as an author and comedienne, but also as an actress in such plays as The Vagina Monologues and The Food Chain. The 50th Anniversary highlights also include the unique blend of tight harmonies by two different electrifying vocal groups. Hot off the success of two PBS specials, the boys of Under the Streetlamp deliver classic hits from The Drifters and The Beatles as well as a show-stopping medley from the Four Seasons catalogue of hits, on October 11 at 3 pm. And back by popular demand is The Doo Wop Project, featuring the performers of Motown the Musical and Jersey Boys, the group that introduced the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The repertoire includes “Little Bitty Pretty One,” “Since I Don’t Have You,” “Remember” and many other familiar hits.  The Doo Wop Project will take place on November 15 at 3 pm. Dances spotlighting this season are dramatic and gorgeous to see. “The National Dance Company of Siberia” will dazzle audiences with over 50 Siberian folk dancers twirling and leaping in beautiful costumes to evoke cultures stretching from the Arctic to the border of China. The company’s orchestra utilizes folk instruments to interweave authentic, regional music resulting in a performance that showcases this wonderful dance troupes’ 55-year tradition. The curtain rises at 3 pm on October 18. Campania Flamenca: José Porcel is an explosion of brilliant costumes, rhythms, colors and emotions that reflect the vitality and passion of the Spanish people. Live musicians and vocalists will accompany this masterful performance choreographed by José Porcel. This exciting art form will be brought to life on October 25 at 3 pm. Capping off the fall season is Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, an early satire that Joy Behar Don’t let the high cost of shows in Manhattan plus the added expense of parking your car stop you from seeing quality entertainment. Although the Captain’s daughter loves the sailor she promises to be a faithful daughter and marry the officer. Enter Little Buttercup, the “baby farmer,” who admits her mistake from many years before—that the sailor was really born to the Captain’s parents, and vice versa. Rejoicing begins, as everyone finally finds true love. The program is open to gifted children entering kindergarten in September 2015. The major focus of the program is to expand students’ knowledge and develop creative and critical thinking skills.
