Our family makes it a priority to give back to our community whenever possible, so we were happy to bring these meaningful and engaging literacy initiatives to many communities throughout Queens.” This marks the third year that Vallo Transportation sponsored a Summer Read Aloud and Crafts program at the Whitestone Community Library of Queens Library. Dozens of local kids attended this free special event that included a pajama storytime reading of “Wheels on the Bus,” a school bus-themed arts & crafts activity and refreshments. As part of this sponsorship, Vallo also provided a grant to the Queens Library Foundation to underwrite the purchase of a collection of new children’s books for the branch. “Building great readers is one of the most important things libraries do for children. It is the foundation for academic success. Queens Library is grateful for the continuing support of Vallo Transportation and the DeSabato family,” said Thomas W. Galante, Queens Library’s President and CEO. This year, Vallo became the presenting sponsor of a new family reading initiative entitled Page to Stage, a partnership between Queens Library and Queens Theatre. Children of all ages attended free events that included classic storytime readings and activities at the Bayside, Corona and Flushing branches of Queens Library. Afterward, participants were invited to corresponding theatrical and musical performances at Queens Theatre to witness these literary works come to life on stage. “We had a lot of fun doing this program, and the librarians really loved the way we engaged the kids. The activities we lead them through were inquiry based learning activities that characterized the themes of the story we read to them. Many of the youth in our community had never been to see a play in a theatre, and thanks to Vallo’s support they were given the chance to see live theatre for the first time!” said Richard Hinojosa, Director of Education at Queens Theatre.
