4 The Queens Courier • august 28, 2014 for breaking news visit www.queenscourier.com Sunnyside launches borough’s first ‘Bike Friendly Business District’ BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO aaltamirano@queenscourier.com @aaltamirano28 The bicycle wheels are going round and round in Sunnyside. On Aug. 23, the neighborhood became Queens’ first “Bike Friendly Business District.” A Bike Friendly Business District is a system of businesses, cultural institutions, and community organizations dedicated to boosting safe bicycling, according to Transportation Alternatives. The advocacy organization has established Bike Friendly Business Districts in the East Village, Lower East Side and along Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn. “The launch of Sunnyside’s very own Bike Friendly Business District is an opportunity for our neighborhood to showcase its diversity as well as its eclectic mix of shops, restaurants and cafes,” said Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who helped launch the district with Transportation Alternatives, local business owners, cyclists and pedestrians. “Cyclists should come out to Sunnyside and shop at the over 70 participating businesses. As ridership climbs in our city, and the cycling infrastructure grows here in western Queens, Sunnyside hopes to capitalize by highlighting all we have to offer.” The businesses that support safer conditions for both cyclists and pedestrians will offer special commercial discounts to members of Transportation Alternatives. The business owners are looking to transform Queens Boulevard to include safe spaces for pedestrians, protected lanes for cyclists and dedicated lanes for buses. “Designating Sunnyside as a Bike Friendly Business District means that we’re committed to making the neighborhood safe, accessible and fun for everyone,” said Rachel Thieme, executive director of the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District. Crew members started moving equipment into the area on Aug. 21. A Ryder truck was spotted in front of Anchor Inn on Northern Boulevard where the crew prepared the motel for shooting. The director of the film is Joachim Trier and according to reports, the movie is set to be completed and released in 2015. Eisenberg is known for his bigger roles in the movies “Social Network” and “Zombieland.” Byrne, the oldest of the trio, starred in many movies including “The Usual Suspects” and “In Treatment.” The French actress Huppert has played in many European movies but was also in “I Heart Huckabees.” “Louder Than Bombs” is still in the very early stages but according to reports, the plot is about a late war photographer, played by Huppert, whose husband and two sons discover a secret about her past. The secret ends up unravelling the lives of the men into chaos. The movie is being labeled a drama. The plot of “Louder Than Bombs” doesn’t take place in Queens but the crew plans on using two locations in the area, according to a spokeswoman for the crew. The first is in the inn on Northern Boulevard and the second is at a residential corner on 215th Place and 38th Avenue.
