Congresswoman Grace Meng has called for a Congressional hearing examining details surrounding the exorbitant 400 percent price increase of the life-saving EpiPen device. “Thousands of Americans rely on EpiPens in a given year, and perhaps no time is more important in the purchasing of these devices than the beginning of a new school year,” said Meng in a release. EpiPens are injection devices used to treat severe allergic reactions in emergency situations. Research estimates that 15 million Americans and 1 in 13 children suffer from severe food allergies. In 2007, Mylan N.V., a global generic and specialty pharmaceutical company, acquired the EpiPen. During that same year, an EpiPen cost an estimated $57. Today, one device can cost over $500, despite recent reports that the single-use mechanism injects less than one dollar’s worth of the drug. “It is unclear to me what warrants such a dramatic mark-up in price, and it is my hope that a hearing before your committee will answer that question,” said Meng in a letter sent Tuesday morning addressed to two judges on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. “As a mother, and as a co-chair of the Bipartisan Congressional Kid’s’ Safety Caucus, I believe Americans have a right to know why access to this inexpensive to-produce device has been so severely constrained.” Photo via Greg Friese/Flickr EpiPen Auto-Injector in use. LAWMAKER MEETS WITH NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT YWCA OF QUEENS Assemblywoman Nily Rozic recently met with Katherine Kim, executive director at the YWCA of Queens, in her district office this week.
