Men and women sit hunched over laptops sipping coffee, pausing occasionally to savor a forkful of something on a plate. A large, white-painted, wooden table in the front window holds miniature pots of freshly picked flowers, which are dwarfed by terra cotta pots brimming with home-fried potato chips. The menu on the website seems simple enough—pea risotto with farm-fresh petits pois, basil oil and wild greens. Brioche bread with organic rhubarb and strawberry compote. Steel-cut oatmeal with house-made granola and fruit. But the titles are merely words. And you might want to browse what is referred to as the ethnic menu for some of the most delectable selections. In Woodside, Dawa’s is not just serving up beautiful renditions of New American cuisine, but some re-imagined versions of nomadic Himalayan classics. Nepal-born chef and co-owner Dawa Bhuti leaves the Tibetan food to her father, keeping the menus separate. I first came in to  sample a beet pasta I had seen on their Instagram feed. “We replaced the beet pasta with the poached eggs and smoked salmon,” explained Dawa, her eyes lighting up. “It’s served on this incredible little cake made with brown rice and kale, and topped with a homemade salsa verde. My father just brought the arugula from a farm upstate ... Oh, and you have to try the chicken sandwich, too.” From the authentic side, blood sausage arrives in a fiery sauce. Shabaley’s (deep-fried meat pastries) are topped with bright pink pickled onions for balance. The momo are delicately pinched into glistening half-moon dumplings and served in a fenugreek tomato sauce. The cuisine is exceptional, and the service impeccable. The menu changes frequently based on availability and the season. It’s a brilliant brunch locale supplemented with a true taste of Tibet in the middle of Queens, all served in an inviting space that feels a lot like home.
